Has anybody with an R-31 tried out both / either of the Rocna or the Mantus anchors?

I'm looking at the Rocna 15kg or Mantus M1 35lb. I'm thinking these are the right size for the boat (though comments welcome here); what I am concerned about is whether one fits better than the other on the factory bow roller.

Both are similarly priced (within $30 of one another), and I'll cede that they are likely equally effective, so it really just comes down to whether one fits on the roller better than the other (the geometry is slightly different on each).

Any other issues I should think about?

Thanks!

I installed a 15kg Rocna on our R31S and it fits just fine, though no room to spare. I have a good photo but don’t see how to attach it. BTW, the Rocna sets much more quickly than the Lewmar that came with the boat.

Getting a User Photo Album is easy but it requires submitting a request from within the site structure.

1. Sign on to the site.

2. Select the User Control Panel link from the upper left corner of any page. Note: On the home page, this link is in your user menu in the upper right.

3. Click the Usergroups tab, then select the radio button next to the User Albums group.
Scroll down, choose "Join selected" in the drop-down menu, and click the Submit button.

Once you do this, an email is automatically sent to the administrator (me). That message will trigger my ability to approve your request, and you'll receive an email indicating your membership in the UserAlbums group has been activated.

There are two ways to embed images in your posts.

If the picture you want to include is in one of your gallery folders (on Tugnuts), click on the g2Imgbutton. That will open another window which will allow you to browse your galleries and select a picture. Be patient, it can take a while for the new window to populate. It should default to your album when it opens.

Click the box in the upper left of the picture you want to post. Scroll (way) down to the bottom of the window and click Submit. That will attach the picture to your post.

If the picture isn't in your gallery, perhaps something you've seen elsewhere on the web, or in another personal web collection (i.e. flickr, iCloud, google, etc.) then you click the Img button. The image/collection must be open to the public.

This will create the following string in your posting window - then you copy and paste the URL (http://whatever...jpg) of the desired image in the middle, between the ][ brackets. The trick here is to determine the direct URL of the image. Various image hosting sites show it in different ways. Sometimes it's right up in the address bar. Other times it's listed under "Share This Image", etc.

You can determine if you have the correct URL by hitting the Preview button. If it displays, you're good to go. If it's not correct, the form will give you some kind of clue so you can go back and dig around. You'll only have to figure it out once for each host.

I'll watch for the message, and look forward to seeing your pictures.

Cheers,

Bruce

We installed the Rocna 15 on our R-31 CB. Have had it over 3 years and love it. Having said that, I did meet Greg Kutsen, one of the owners/directors in Mantus Marine, a few years ago. He said that the Mantus and Rocna were very similar in design and performance but claimed that the Mantus had the edge because the “business end” of the fluke is heavier than the Rocna and will therefore dig in quicker. He had them both side by side to demonstrate and I could easily feel the difference. Also the Mantus disassembles which makes it perfect for a spare as well as a primary anchor. The company makes a bow roller extension that easily attaches to the existing roller to accommodate the Mantus geometry if the existing roller doesn’t fit.

We installed the 32 lbs. Mantus Galvanized Steel anchor and their Anchor Swivel on our R-31 sometime ago and it fit perfectly on the bow roller and made deploying and retrieving the anchor easy.

Thanks!! Is the idea with the swivel that when the wind and/or current change, you swing around the anchor so it doesn’t have to reset?

My last boat’s anchor, a CQR, had the advantage of the integral pivot/swivel so anything less than a 120 or so degree swing wouldn’t result in an anchor reset.

Are there any drawbacks to the swivel that you’ve found? My understanding is that Mantus has engineered them not to be the weak point, but I know a lot of cruising sailors who are skeptical...

The purpose of the swivel is to avoid to have the anchor come up with the sharp point up i.s.o. the “expected” way with he point down.

The swivel is not a weak point since the anchor is attached to the chain.

Went with the Vulcan 15kg on our R31 w a mantis swivel.

As someone who owns both the 25 pound Mantus M1 anchor and the Rocna 22 pound anchor, it’s my opinion that they are both great!
The Rocna is our primary anchor and the Mantus our emergency anchor. I don’t think you can go wrong with either. Pick what fits your budget and/or your bow roller.
We use the Rocna with the Mantus S1 swivel because it fits our setup. We keep the Mantus M1 as our emergency because we can fold it up and store it in a smaller space. I am comfortable with the Mantus stored because I think losing an anchor is something that happens mostly during retrieval and gives you plenty of time to get the emergency anchor ready.
Again, both great products!

We installed a Rocna 15kg on our RT31CB. It fit fine on the factory roller with no mods necessary.
This is the fastest setting anchor we have owned, and we have experience with similar sized CQRs, Spades, and Deltas.
We have no experience with the Mantus for comparison.

We chose not to use a swivel, and have had no issues with the anchor retrieving correctly.

We did upgrade our rode to 150 feet of 5/16 G43 High Test chain and 150 feet of 9/16 8-plait line. We ordered the rode through Defender and had them do the rope to chain splice, which has no trouble going through the gypsy. With this setup, you will have to knock down the chain stack, but we already had to do that with the factory 50 feet of chain. There is plenty of room in the anchor locker for this setup and I believe the extra weight has reduced the boat's "bow up" stance at high power cruise settings.

I have been researching anchors, reading what I can find and watching scores of videos.

I started out wanting to prove to myself the Rocna was the way to go. The more I see, the more I am getting myself convinced the Rocna Vulcan is better, no hoop can be an advantage, sets better, holds better.

Just an opinion for what its worth.

I was following this thread on Anchors for the Ranger Tug 31S. I wasn’t that happy with the factory standards 22# Bruce. Also thought. It might be a bit small. I used a Delta anchor for my 39 ft Sailboat (before tug) and it always set perfectly and held confidently no matter what the wind. Today I installed a 35# Delta Stainless anchor. It fit perfectly in the anchor roller I read the threads on Mantus 33 and thought the Delta would fit too..
I also installed a stainless anchor swivel. Hopefully this will keep my chain and rode from twisting.

I use Mantus M1 with swivel and anchor guard (you'll need one) as my primary and have Rocna as my spare anchor. I anchored out in mostly benign conditions, 15-20kts wind was the strongest but the anchor is rated for much stronger winds. No complaints for Rocna as well but since all my hardware are from Mantus I use M1 as primary. Quite happy with it, Mantus stuff is great.
Mantus is offering 20% off until 7/13, awesome deal.
