Hi folks,
It seems that anchor discussions can get a bit controversial, but...

Have just signed off on a brand new 29s (very excited) but am concerned about the Bruce style anchor that is standard. Does anyone know if the 29S will take a Rocna or the Rocna Vulcan, or would there be fit problems with the stock bow roller?

And of course I have ask- do you guys have full confidence in the Bruce? I don't like much of what I've read, and I like to sleep at night. No need to have the discussion about proper scope or amount of chain, as I know this already. Just wondering about the anchor itself. FYI, I'm in the Pacific Northwest (BC).

Thanks in advance for the input!

David

Here is a curve for you. I went with the Manson supreme. I had a Rocna and the particular manufacturing time period caused defective anchors and there was a recall. When I went to switch mine out I saw the Manson Supreme and went for it and left the store with a new anchor and some money in my pocket. It is basically the same as the Rocna with some subtle design differences with the shank. Probably to avoid patent infringement. I have an R-27 and went with the 35 lb. I had to extend the launch and put on a larger bale and that was it. I sleep well at night. You can always use your Bruce as a spare

After having difficulty getting our Bruce to hold and having several people suggest to me that we should get a different bigger anchor I asked a very experienced sailboat friend of mine who has many years of experience going to Alaska for his opinion. He said the 16.5 lb bruce on our boat (R27) is fine for lunchtime anchoring and and overnight in protected harbors in moderate weather conditions. However, because weather is unpredictable he recommended to get the biggest anchor we can get that will work with our windlass. You never know when a storm will come up overnight. We looked at the options together and determined the Rocna 15 (33lbs) would be a good choice for our boat. I plan to change our anchor out this winter to this Rocna anchor (or equivalent). I checked the fit in with what appears to be the same anchor davit at West Marine and it looks like it will fit without modification. I will keep the Bruce as a backup in the Vberth forward locker.

In this case size does matter. 😀

We went with a 35# Manson Supreme on our R-27 like Mike. We just had to get a bigger bail. The anchor that came with the boat looked too small for my liking. I think we over doubled the weight of the standard anchor set up. Manson has a newer anchor called the Manson Boss. It resembles the Vulcan. Sleep tight! :|

We have a Rocna on Kismet and had a similiar style on our last boat. In 8 years we lost our footing one time and that was because of weeds. Whether a Rocna, Manson or similar style you will be very satisfied and rest very comfortably at anchor over night. 40 feet of chain is fine but more is always better.

Does anyone know if a Rocna will clear the bow roller/pad on a trailer. (C30) I am afraid my only option is to stop at West Marine and try on anchors. This is difficult with the wide load trailer.
