Anyone have experience trailering their 29? Out of state or country?

Hello Skookum:
We bought a used 2018 R 29S this May and have trailered it from Canada, where we bought it, to our home in Western NY. We then trailered it to Tobermory Ontario for a couple of weeks. We purchased a Load Rite trailer from a local dealer and obtained the wide load permits ourselves. Once you fill out all the information necessary subsequent permits are easy. The only issue we had was not going through the wide lanes at customs. Let me know if you have any other questions.

We are in Canby Oregon - Neighbors! 😀 Our R29CB lives in the barn at home. All of our boating is Olymipia and north, so we trailer all the time. Oregon and Washington are easy, Canada is also, but the border crossing can be tricky. Oversize load permits are easy online for Washington. $10 per month.

We’ve owned our R29S 2 1/2 years and have trailered her from Seattle to Florida, 2 round trips to Florida from Michigan, to and from Ontario. After 6 years of trailering our prior R27 we found the hardest part of trailering the R29S was navigating the varied State and Provence permits. Some are very easy, like Washington State and others like Ohio and more complicated. If you’d like you can check out our blog. http://Www.trailertrawlerlife.com And do a search of trailering of our R29S or PM me with any questions. We’re certainly not the experts, we learned from others just the way you are planning to do.

It is pretty simple crossing borders. Just answer all questions honestly and as simply as possible. You will be entering through the trucking lanes due to being a wide load and the agents are not well versed on personal crossing as they do commercial all the time. This can be a plus or minus depending on the agent. I have found the more crossings I do it seems to go easier each time. I suspect once they pull up a history that you have crossed a few times they understand you are not trying to defect.
I always stress that I am moving my own personal boat when applying for permits.. You do not need a DOT number in the USA or a CVOR number in Canada you need to ask for an exception as you are not commercial. If you are using a permit agency they will insist on these as again they are used to commercial permits.. you need to stand strong and tell them not needed.
Check with your state what the requirements are for personal licensing and certificates for your truck and trailer. Canada will honour everything as long as legal in your state.
Me being from Ontario I needed to up my drivers license due to the weight of the boat and trailer. ( written and road test )
I had to increase the load rating of my truck registration ( just had to pay more money and they changed )
My truck and trailer need to be inspected every year and I get a sticker for both.
Basically you are a transport truck with no air brakes... Speaking of brakes.. with permits you need to stop at all open weigh scales ( USA and Canada ) they typically wave you through but sometimes if they are bored will pull you in to chat. The one thing they always check when they stop you is the breakaway braking system. They will disconnect the electrical connection between the truck and trailer. Pull the breakaway pin and tell you to try to pull forward. If all is working you should not be able to move the trailer. I always check this every morning.. I do a walk around the trailer every stop and feel the hubs to make sure they are not hot. It is all easy you just need to make sure all is in order. We boat on the severn system in the summer so if you get in the Orillia area you will stop at the City harbour..... look us up we will come visit and show you where to get the best baking in town 🙂

Thanks all!
No pix of wide load sign?

Jim,

When looking at your blog, I noticed what appears to be a lambs wool cover for your strap on the cockpit of Kismet...

Do you have a source?

Hello Tom. I got the idea from Mike Rizzo. It’s a DIY project in that you can buy the material from JoAnn’s Fabric and then have someone sew it up for you, like I did or you can see it up yourself like Mike. If you proceed make a few extras.

Thanks for this thread, folks. Good info. We'll trailer at some point in the next couple of years. Trailer will even make storage a little less expensive. I've got the truck and the boat (R29), just have to drop the cake on the trailer.

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and also a new owner of a C 302 coupe. I live in the central Florida area. I just returned 2 weeks ago from my 2 day delivery experience at Kent WA. Due to the circumstance I decided to drive to WA and tow the boat home after the delivery to Florida. Interesting trip to say the least. It was kind of a bucket list thing. Because of Thanksgiving coming and trying to beat the SNOW along with the necessity of title and taxes to be paid in Florida I left with a 3 day tag permit from WA and only for WA. I did not know the exact route I would be taking because of the weather change on the way back. Running out of time my wife said just go (easy for her to say she is at home). So I rolled the dice and left. Long story short 3100 miles no tag ,no permit , no wide load sign. Several police and many weight stations I went by no one seemed to care. Yes I know before all you chime in (it is not my first trip to the store) I was LUCKY. I also have a 28' Pursuit off shore with a 9'6" beam and have towed it from Florida to Tenn. many many times right through Atlanta in the diamond lane, yes there are 2 people in the truck and around Florida for the last 13 years. Maybe I should play the lottery LOL, probably not that lucky. Just for the record I believe you should get permits and be legal. You ask for my experience just thought I would share it right or wrong. Looking forward to meeting up with some of you. Seems like a great group of boaters and people.

For those looking for a link to self-issue their Washington permit for oversize trailering, here it is:
https://www.wsdot.wa.gov/commercial-vehicle/permits/self-issue

The permit type you want is "Non-Divisible Load". $10 per month.
