Keeping hair out of the sump is a great start to keeping the sump clean. To go beyond this we have used 'Raritan Cleans Potties' (CP) for the last 5 or 6 years. Two or three ounces mixed in a cup of water and added to the drain every week or so has kept our sump free of hair and soap scum. As a bonus it also keeps the sump and drain smelling fresh.

If we are leaving the boat for a few weeks or more I flush the sump with fresh water and add about a pint of C.P.

A square of hardware cloth(fine screen mesh) taped over the sump opening,stops any object and hairs from entering. Used same to prevent any object from entering the galley and vanity drains.

Love it. But what is it and where did you get it?

McMaster Carr sells 2 inch round stainless steel screen discs with different size holes. Just trim the bottom and three small dabs of silicone and you are in business. It works great for us.

Hardware cloth is available in rolls or you can buy screen repair patches (same material) at H. D., Ace etc

In my neck of the woods, hardware cloth is heavy wire mesh, typically 3/8" size. Definitely not fine mesh screen material.

Regional differences... go figure!
