Rub Rail Treatment

Anyone come up with a good product for the black rubber/plastic that is between the metal band and the hull? The material looks similar to some bumper material. My R-31 has faded - I assume the other models have similar. I have tried armor all and similar products but they don't work well.

I don't have an answer for you enquiry.... and I assume you keep your boat out in the open exposed to strong light and sun. This is a recipe for things to fade. After a little more than 5 years the black rub rail on our R25 is still as good as new because it's kept under cover at its moorage all year round.

Mine has turned as well. Tried Amorall, and a good waxing, but eventually it is back to chalky. Would love to hear from anyone else with the magic formula.

Vaseline rubbed onto the black rub rail material and wiped off will provide a short term solution but alas they will fade out again....but they sure look like new for a month or two.

Good morning folks ! Just a suggestion ..... I have been using an automotive detailing product called Back-to-Black. It is a product of Mothers of Huntington Beach, Cal. and can be purchased online through Herrington Automotive. It lasts at least six months after an application on the launch and the tug and that's pretty good for the climate in Georgia ...... Fran 😉

i used Bondo Black Restore - seemed to work well. I lightly sanded with super fine grit sandpaper first prior to application.

I find that fenders work best just below the rub rail. On my 27 and now on the 31 same deal. The beautiful Ranger Grey seems to be more work to keep shiny and nice looking. The fenders cause a bit of scuffing on the hull. I wonder if anyone has thought of putting another rub rail about mid fender down from the factory one. This would keep the fender off the gel coat. Maybe. I have been drilling holes in this boat this week and thought: What is a few more?

We put covers on our Taylor fenders for the R31 and haven't really experienced scratching / scuffing. When moored at the pier we usually try to keep off the floating dock as much as possible though. I will try to find the Mothers Back to Black product for the rubber on the rub rail.

We use renew it in black. Good for 4 years so far. I do redo it each year just keep it looking new. So try Renew it, in stores auto motive stores.

Thanks. I will get one of the recommendations. I am still looking for the holy grail of wax/sealant/polish that stops my red gelcoat from oxidizing so quickly in the virginia sun. Currently evaluating mirage stuff. Thus far seems about the same as rejex

I've used Rejex in the past on my blue hull and it didn't last long. I had the same results with the Prizm Mirage sealant using it over the Prizm Polish. This year I used the Prizm Polish to deoxidize and then applied two coats of Collonite Fleetwax 885 paste wax, the blue hull has never looked so good. The real test will be how it looks 6 months from now. Follow the Collonite directions closely, applying too much will result in it drying and then it will be very tough to remove.

My hull does well with anything. It's the eyebrows and horizontal gelcoat surfaces. Perhaps I will try fleetwax next

I have used fleet wax on the boat and my plane and have found it to last better than other applications. I do my boat twice a year and the brows every few months.
