Rudder grease follow up

Thanks Ronnie. I found the zerk fitting. I really worked to get any grease into it. Like other posts, it seems to be full, with no bleed out. What is the correct procedure for regreasing? Just pump hard to make sure it's full or?

If it's hard to pump then it means that it is designed with a really tight seal or the old grease has dried up. In either case you don't want to pump too hard or you can blow out the seals. Believe it or not you can produce an enormous amount of pressure with a simple grease gun. Patience is the key. Inject a tiny bit and wait. Rinse and repeat until you see a bit of grease oozing out. If the grease coming out looks clean and/or fresh, stop. Mission accomplished.
 
Could be that the zerk fitting is frozen (corroded). Replace it pump in new grease. On my R27 I found no seals. I suspect that the grease seals (prevents) water from coming up the shaft besides lubricating the shaft.
 
When doing maintanence in the internal rudder area it is a good idea to remove the bolt from the ram arm and lubricate the connection with grease. When it is unattached you can also manipulate the rudder by hand to judge the ease of movement for binding problems and grease the zerk. The arm to rudder connection can get stiff without grease. It is also a good idea to engage the autopilot pump periodically to keep it from feezing up due to lack of use on a regular basis. Turn ignition to on. Using arrows on autopilot controller manipulate rudder one way then the other once or twice. Yes, I found out about this the hard way. Also, when you turn the ignition to on, you should be able to hear the steady hum of the fuel pump. If it is not a steady him you might have issues in your future. I was told by a reliable Yanmar mechanic that this foretells possible obstructions in the internal fuel tank filter. Thought I would pass on this stuff as I learn about it.
