Hello,

The rudder blade and rudder box are made of brass and bought locally here in Washington state. The shaft of the rudder will be stainless and typically there are some bushings inside the rudder box. Hope this helps.

Thank you,
Kevin Lamont

Yup thanks.

What about the thru hulls? Specifically the inlet screens.
Stay safe out there.

Hey Rich,

All of our bottom thru-hulls are going to be brass including the pickup itself. The ball valves are brass as well.

Thanks,
Kevin Lamont

Kevin,
I thought those hull fittings and ball valves were bronze. Have you always been using brass fittings?

The rudder assembly on my C26 and all Rangers and Cutwaters I assumed were made by Marine Hardware. If so the material used is 70 manganese bronze for the rudder blade. The blade is cast directly onto the stainless steel post. The shaft stuffing box is cast red bronze. I believe the thru hulls are also bronze if purchased from Marine hardware. Brass Doesn't have much of a life expectancy in salt water. Mixing bronze and brass is not a good idea either. I hope Kevin made a mistake which is easy to do between brass and bronze. I would not like the idea of having brass fittings under water.

The requirement for corrosion resistance limits the range of materials from which seacocks and their related components may be made. Only bronze, DZR brass, glass-reinforced plastic and, in some cases, stainless steel may be used.

DZR brass or CR brass is corrosion resistant brass there are some marine fittings made of this material which would be suitable for underwater applications but I don't think the fittings used by Fluid Motion are DZR.

Sorry for the confusion, yes they are bronze and not brass.

Thanks,
Kevin Lamont

Thanks Kevin, You scared me with Brass, thought RT was smart enough to use bronze, my 2014 is bronze.
