I miss not having one. I see Garmin has a control box to add the signal to the network. Access to the steering quadrant is easy. Has anyone done this and if so, suggestions for the position sensor would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

Doing this wouldn't require a new display, right? Or would it? Interesting upgrade. Anyone who does this, please post details!

FYI Howard, the sensor is available at Fisheries Supply for about $18 less (join up as a "member" and you get an additional discount on most items -- on this one, about $2-3 more). Also on Ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/KUS-Stainle...or-Sensor-DC-12V-24V-Marine-New-/200914656264) for under $23 direct from China from a vendor with a high rating (depending on how you feel about Ebay transactions).

Check out the Davis Rudder Position Indicator. It mounts directly to the center of the steering wheel. The wheel needs to be on a vertical plane and it requires about a 2 inch flat surface in the center of the wheel hub for mounting. You can google it. I put one on my older (1992) R-21 and it works great. May be primary or a back up to your electronics. Works all the time and with out power. For mechanical and single station hydraulic steering.

The Garmin autopilot display will show rudder position if it is available on the NMEA 2000 bus. I believe it can also be displayed on the Garmin MFD (5212' etc.) If you have a GMI10/20 installed you have a nice graphical rudder display.

Gini, I frequently use my member discount on Fisheries. I did not think of checking it this morning. Thanks for the reminder. They are typically less (or much less) than Defender when the discount is applied. The free shipping does not hurt either!

Don, many of have autopilots which would make the helm wheel indicator useless. The hydraulic pump will move the rudder without turning the wheel.

Has anyone installed a rudder sender on a 27? It looks like I would need to remove the propane locker to gain access to the rudder arm.

Thank you for the hydraulic steering auto pilot point. The Davis literature in the catalogs and on the web do not mention this. Maybe they consider an auto pilot an additional steering station and in that case it is not recomended. The only auto pilot that I ever had was on a sail boat with mechanical steering and the wheel turned with the auto pilot.

Thanks again.

Just wondering . . . for Howard and Bob or anyone else who has given this project some thought:

Below is a photo of the rudder arm on our R27, and where it attaches to the steering arm. This was taken while our boat was in production at the factory. It isn't as accessible now as it was then. 😉

Looking at that photo, though, caused me to wonder if the Garmin GRF 10 rudder feedback sensor would hook up to it. If that sensor would work with our rudder system, it looks like the sensor/cable combination from Garmin could be purchased for only about $40 or so more than the analog adapter cable by itself. Any thoughts?

The dealer installed a Simrad N2K rudder position indicator on my Cutwater. It is visible as a narrow line on the bottom of the autopilot display and works fine, although I sometimes wish it were a bit more conspicuous.

Bob, see the exchange between Don and Howard earlier in the thread. The Davis type indicator won't work with the autopilot pump. For anyone without that, though, it could be a good -- and very easy -- solution.
