Rule Automatic Bilge Pump Failure

I have a R-31S tug. It has a rule pump and the rear pump is running all of the time. Short of pulling the engine how can you reach it so it can be removed so it can be cleaned and if need be replaced? I appreciate your help in advance.

I’m not familiar with the bilge location on your boat ( I have the CW 30) so can’t help with your main question. But how do you turn it off (I assume it’s not running right now) I.e, do you turn the battery switch to off position.

I remove the fuse under the cockpit sink.

It worked fine when manually engage, but wasn’t working automatically, which turned out to be a blown fuse. Anyway….I am trying to determine where the thing should be mounted. There is a circular ‘bracket’ directly under the packing box - do you know if this bracket is for the bilge pump? Or is yours mounted elsewhere
?

Last summer the sensor float died on my johnson when I was in Canada. I replaced it with the new next gen rule with a built in water sensor. It has worked flawlessly. I had to remount it with the new mount and it was a bit of a pain,
But manageable.

I've replaced both the Rule pumps on my R31. They both can be done with the engine and shaft in place, you just need to maneuver them around, but it's totally doable. Hopefully you have long arms and don't mind laying on your belly.
 
PS, contacted Rule - sent them photos of the pump, including the lot # which is on the outflow pipe which means the bilge hose has to come off…
They are sending a new pump.
 
I have a 2011 Ranger Tug 21ec. If the manual switch for the bilge pump works then the problem isn't the pump. In my case, the float switch that automatically turns on the bilge pump stopped working. It turns out the wiring between the float switch (in the bilge) and the pump was broken. Replaced the float switch that is inexpensive and it works fine again.
 
Received a new Rule pump today - under warranty. Have to say - the guy there was great.
Now all I have to do is work upside down like a bat for 2 hours and replace it.
 
I had a 20 something offer to replace both of my aft bilge pumps (27sa) and he was done with both in less time than it would take me for a single session at the chiropractor.

You mention a new mount….did it come with a mount? I just got the 800 gph version and not quite sure how or where to mount it. It didn’t come with a mount/bracket and there isn’t an existing bracket.
 
Steve... it actually does come with a mount - it just isn't obvious. The "blue" colored basket/strainer in the bottom of the unit separates from the pump. If you remove that basket - you can insert a screw and mount it to the bottom of the bilge (in my case) under the drive shaft. Every once in a while you can "pinch" the pump tabs and then lift the pump from the blue basket which is mounted to the bilge via the screw - and clean and then remount the pump onto the basket. Clear as mud?

Got it…..thanks. I’m guessing one uses a short screw - similar to those used to secure other hoses with zip ties??

Truth is, when I replaced my Rule pump (Same as yours 800 gph), the blue basket was already installed by the previous owner.
There is a lot of "meat" down there to screw into but I am not sure if it is 1/2 inch or longer.

yep - I reused one of the screws (and screw hole) from the mount from the previous Johnson pump. I also have the 800gph version I believe.
