Running engine on trailer...water intake question

Keeping it in the water is the best way to do all this. This is my first trailered boat. When we had the sailboat in the haul out yard and we wanted to run motor we just shoved the hose up the intake (No grill on it) and no one every told us it was wrong so it worked great.

SUCCESS! Here is how I did it:

1. I ran hose from faucet to a common on/off thumb valve attached between the long hose from the faucet and an 8' hose to the filler attachment between strainer and raw water pump. This way I could turn on and off quick in case by chance 1. Impellers really do explode in a few seconds when dry and 2. running waterthrough engine when it is not running will back up through the exhaust and "hydrolock."

2. Holding the on/off valve in my hand inside the cabin I started motor and immediately opened the hose valve (raw water intake thru-hull shut through all this). The previously unprimed raw water pump pushed water through within seconds out exhaust.

Was able to warm up engine, change oil and all good. This will be my method on trailer for now on. Thank you North Island Marine in Anacortes (Yanmar location) for the suggestion on how to do this method.

For sale: Fake A Lake...used for a few minutes only
