Subject: Safety/Emergency tips/instructions for passengers ?

This is something I struggle with each time I have people onboard with me that haven't been onboard before or who are obviously newbies and have no real clue about boating. My approach is to try and not make folks apprehensive or nervous about being out on the waters, miles away from the shoreline.

What are the minimum things to tell people in the event there's an emergency such as the Captain being injured and incapacitated ?

1) tell them the purpose of the RED button on the VHF radio
2) call 911 on their mobile telephones
3) turn off the engine and wait for help
4) hail passing boats for help
5) don't panic.... help will come
6) instruct them on how to operate the VHF radio and/or handheld VHF radio
7) ??????

Thanks... 🙂

I make sure they know the location of all PFDs and fire extinguishers, and I have a laminated card next to the VHF with instructions for making a mayday call.
I also tell them how to deploy the EPIRB, but I realize most tugnuts don't have one.

You can modify the pilot version...
This plane is equipped with two emergency exits. One at the front and one at the back. But in the event of an unscheduled landing feel free to exit through any gaping hole that appears in the aircraft. When we reach cruising altitude we will begin our cabin service. I will pass around a sandwich free free to take a bit and pass it around.

We tell them crew in water procedures. (Don’t jump in to save anyone – it doubles the problem and reduces the resources. I am very fair-minded: I pick them up in the order they go in the water. Adm Nelson would flog a person who went over the side for “leaving the vessel without the Master’s permission.") Do throw floatable objects into the water -- not just PFD but fenders, whatever. Keep them in sight. How to deploy rescue sling.

We also instruct guests on the use of the head – it’s use, limitations, and operation.

Wenniway briefing checklist:

1 Life jacket location -- put on in an emergency
2 Man overboard
Yell out loudly, Man Overboard,
Throw something floatable overboard (red cushion)
Keep person in sight — point
4 Phones in safe locations, only used in cockpit or inside
5 One hand for the man, one for the ship
6 Do not put body between boat and pier to stop, boat will win
7 Keep weight equal — not everyone on one side
8 On bow, don’t block view, help look down channels, no “bow riding”
9 Rough weather or after dark, lifejackets when outside cockpit, and only with permission of Captain
10 Head
If you haven't eaten it first, it doesn't go in
Press button for full five seconds (count!)
Toilet paper under cover, don't use kleenex or paper towel
If needed:
Linehandling instructions
Anchor Instruction in use
Radio Instruction in use

I have p f d that are self deflated able
Everyone on my boat wears a P F D …..
Any questions
