I have to replace a few of my screens. I see that they are black aluminum and I also see that white powder tends to form in spots. Obviously the white powder is attributable to oxidation. Does anyone know of a logical reason not to replace the aluminum with fiberglass mesh instead?

Thanks,

Mike Rizzo

Hi Mike.
I just saw your post as the admiral and I are winding up a couple of weeks touring around Oregon. We changed over to fiberglass sun reduction screen several years ago and have found it to be holding up extremely well. We are located on Lake Erie; therefore, Just Dreamin' is placed in her heated storage room from mid October - April so I can not say how the screen would hold up if exposed to elements year round.

The white powder is aluminum oxide. Bronze screens are another alternative.

The fibreglass is much easier to work with, but it does tear a lot easier as I'm sure you realize. Just keep a spare piece on board in case you get a tear.
