I need to replace one of the screws that hold the small white roller in place. Advice on where to buy or the screw size and type of thread.

It is a standard type stainless bolt with a smooth shaft the thread only at the end. You should be able to pick it up at a hardware store in their stainless steel section of specialty screws and bolts or West Marine. Sorry, but I do not know the exact size. However, I am sure you will be able to measure the length and get the diameter by measuring the hole. Make sure you get one of those nylon locking nuts and washers for both ends.

If you look in the manual for the windlass, they may have an exploded view of the parts that may tell you the size of the bolt that is needed. You could also call the windlass company to find the size of the bolt. Make sure the replacement bolt is made of stainless steel.

I noticed that Lowes now has a large expanded section for stainless steel hardware.

Roy,

Are you referring to one of the screws that holds the white roller on the bow roller assembly or something on the windlass itself?

I had a screw for the aft white roller on the bow roller assembly fall out. This is a SS Philips head countersunk screw. I found a replacement in a SS screw assortment that I had previoulsy purchased from West Marine. It had the correct threads and head design but was too long. I shortened it with a dremel cutoff tool, used some loctite, it is holding fine now.

I now check it much more frequently. It experiences a lot of vibration whenever the chain rolls over it.

Yesterday after boating 11hours from Petersburg, AK to Peril Straits, including an hour break to enjoy whales, I needed to get in a cove and anchor as it was getting late and the dark clouds were hanging low, ready to drop more rain.

I was surprised to see the white roller hanging completely out of alignment on the windless but it was 10:45 pm, so I tied off the line and crashed, after pulling out the toolbox and setting the alarm for 4:15 am. I thought about how I was going to be able to pull up 60 ft of line and 100 ft of chain plus the Rocna, and decided that was going to require a lot of energy, so no worrying, just get some sleep.

This morning it was light out and amazingly the screw was on the deck over against the side! Luckily it was not sheared and in the light I was able to screw it back in. I still do not trust it, but am on the dock at Sitka, and will hope to get a couple of screws here to carry plus an extra roller when I return.

(After getting the anchor up easily, I had plenty of time to get to Sergius Narrows for high slack. I will write what happened in the Waggoner-titled blog  )

The same thing happened to me about a year after we got our boat. If you haven't found one already, you can get the machine screw at Waypoint Marine 2240 Harbour Road in Sidney, which I gather is near your boat. We keep our R27 down the road at Van Isle. Our windless seems to be mounted very slightly off centre, which I'm guessing puts extra pressure on the screw, and the bearings, for that matter, which I just replaced. Good luck.

Yep, same thing happened to us after about three months. I bought a stainless hardware kit from West Marine, it had a few in it. I also put a little grease on the steel pin that goes through the plastic roller before I put it back together. No problems since then.
