Sea Strainer leaking

I've noticed a small leak from the plastic dome on the sea strainer coming from the seal between the plastic and the rubber gasket. Is there a sealant to put on the plastic dome to better seal to the rubber gasket after cleaning the strainer?

The plastic strainer cover for my Genset cracked and leaked. I had trouble finding a replacement cover even thoough Seadog lists it as a part number. However, Boatfix.com has the entire strainer for less than $10 so you get a new cover plus strainer parts. By the way Boatfix.com has provided my best source of boating supplies so far at the best price.

We've seen one of the covers crack (frozen over the winter?) which prevented the seal. You might want to remove it (after closing the sea cock ) and examine it carefully...

We broke ours once by tightening the plastic screw at the top too tightly. The seacock was closed at the time (a VITAL step prior to removing the seawater strainer cover). But it meant no boating until we were able to purchase a new one. We now carry a spare. It is not cheap ($60?)

What info can you provide for ordering the large strainer cover. After all the trouble I had finding the smaller coves I would like to carry a spare for larger cover also.

Mine had a crack in it . I repaired it with MarineTex.

The small strainers are Sea Dog strainers. I think the hose sizes & strainer mesh are different on these. Boatfix.com lists 3 different strainers (1/2", 5/8", & 3/4" hose fittings) but the clear plastic covers are all same. Since they were each less than $10 I bought one of each & got 3 extra covers & strainer mesh. I do not have the part numbers but is you search seadog strainers on Boatfix you will see them

As for the R-21 - I've been wondering about the little (5/8") sea strainer installed on the 21 tug. It seems rather small, and the screen is a rolled up piece of mesh. Maybe this is all that's needed for the YM30, but in ocean use, why not something more substantial? Has anyone made any modification here? Alex, "Kamalani"

I've looked at that strainer on my boat and wondered about it. I'm used to huge bronze (?) and glass things that were on my Albin, servicing a small four cylinder Yanmar.

I've cleaned the strainer a couple of times; I keep getting a gray, putty like substance in it. Yesterday, I watched it while the engine was running, things looked normal.

My only concern is that it doesn't look very strong. A hard bump might break the plastic cover. It's located in a position where one might bump it when changing the oil filer, or cleaning under the engine. I was aware of the location and was careful when changing my oil filter yesterday.

Tuglet is a fresh water boat most of the time. Had it in brackish water a couple of months ago.
