i am looking seriously at buying a 21 EC (posted separate request in For Sale forum). It is not likely I will get a real sea trial and may buy one without getting to try it out. The design just fits what I need....a trailored small pilothouse inter island boat for winter use with heated cabin. I really like an inboard diesel. Also looking at Shamrock 20' pilothouse, but most are inboard gas.

My concern is how comfortable the second "crew" seat is, especially if you have a little chop and roll. If it is not ideal, has anyone come up with a better second seat....and for that matter anything that makes the captains seat better?

We will be making 1-3 hour trips in the boat.

The second seat is in some ways more comfortable than helm seat, in that under rough conditions you can hang onto the metal post that runs from the corner of the sink area to the ceiling.

I agree with Larry. The helm seat is very comfortable even in choppy conditions.

We have found both seats to be relatively comfortable. My wife wishes the "crew" seat reclined a bit, so I told her I would install a hammock for her. ;-) Seriously though, we find that she and my daughters spend most of their time on the stern couch while cruising, so not much of an issue for us. I can't envision a modification that would be any more comfortable and not take up too much of the precious cabin space on the R21, but would be interested to see any mod you make. Enjoy the R21, they are awesome boats!
