Seeking "Tug Truth": What’s the real-world maintenance commitment?

Most of the time spent on working on the boat is the fun, highly optional tasks like better storage or nicer cup holders, upgraded anchor, or whatever. In terms of actual maintenance, both the Yamaha outboards and the Volvo inboards are famously reliable. There are other parts many people replace, either because they wore out or because they wanted a better water pump or whatever. It’s kind of a choose your own adventure exercise in many ways.

There are so many factors that weigh in on this though. New or used? Size? The bigger the boat the more complex the maintenance. How much do you want to customize it, or do you just want to cruise it? You can spend hundreds of hours and tens thousands of dollars customizing or nearly no time and just a couple of thousand on routine service.

If you just check the basics, like oil, regularly, hose it down with freshwater after each saltwater trip, and clean it like you would your house, you probably will not have that much required work. It will mostly be occasional worn out part.

Thank you Jesperjo for taking the time to share your feedback and insights. It's incredibly helpful!

Thank you everyone so very much for your feedback. I greatly appreicate you taking the time to respond. This community is fantatic, you TugNuts rock and hopefully not roll - as in your boat! I'm looking forward purchasing a R29 S / LE at the end of this summer/early fall in the Chesapeak Bay / DMV area so if you or anyone you know is selling on the east coast please let me know. Kind regards, Skipper Sue
