I have a 2016 Ranger trawler with D3 200 Volvo inboard diesel engine. Is there a video demonstrating changing oil?

Changing oil D3 is a easy task. This is a small automotive engine that is marinized. It holds about 5 qts. Run the engine to heat up the oil. Using a sucker oil pump. Remove the dip stick and place a 1/4" od hose or tube down the dipstick until you feel it bottom out at the bottom of the pan. Turn the pump on and suck the oil out as much as possible. I would get the boat to list to port which would help to get most of the oil sucked out. Remove the oil filter using a 36mm socket. It is tight so a nice even pull is needed to unseat it. There is a rubber sealing gasket that the filter cap. remove the old gasket and notice the install before removing. In stall the new gasket in the same position and confirm it is well seated. Apply a small amount of oil to this gasket. Here is a thread I started about the oil filter install and seal.

Follow the explanation of the filter install from that thread.

When filling the crank case with oil. DO NOT over FILL!! The D3 does not hold much oil. The D3 is a high speed diesel engine that will get windage from the crank shaft. If the oil level is to high it will cause foaming and a lot of vapors to the engine ventilation filter. This will cause carry over to the turbo and after cooler. I always set my oil level with the boat sitting as level as possible to the middle of the marks on the dip stick. This was normally 5 quarts of oil then adding about a 1/4 of a quart after running it and checking the level.

I have pretty much the same question for a 2019 R-29 with D4 300 Volvo. Also need to know what equipment to buy to make this easiest.

I just changed my D3-200i-g oil filter for the first time and noticed there is an inner "basket" that appears to be connected to the cap. It is realtively loose, but seems to be connected firmly. It slides inside the filter - perhaps it is for alignment or something?

Since I couldn't figure it out, I put everything back and installed the new filter. Everything is working well, but I am curious why it isn't listed in the manual or anywhere I have found yet.

Anyway know about this and how it is attached?

Yep, there is an inner basket that swivels on the cap. I have no idea what it is for but it is part of the cap assembly so leave it be. Note: the filter can be pretty tight on the basket so use care when pulling it off. I put the whole thing in a gallon ziplock and then pulled the filter off the basket carefully while touching only the outside of the ziplock bag. I did not know this the first time and broke one of the clips holding the basket to the cap. You need to pull only straight without any side force. A new cap assembly is expensive as the basket cannot be purchased separately!

On the Volvo D4 300, there is an oil change "tube" that is locate on the aft starboard side of the engine. It is shown in the video above.

I use one of these to remove the oil

This is also shown in the video above. You can also get one at West Marine.

Hope this helps!
