I recently spoke with a Yanmar mechanic familiar with Ranger Tugs. I mentioned the multiple times I found my boat with a clogged intake strainer which impaired the water flow through the impeller and caused the engine to over heat. He recommended installing a second water intake with symmetrical placement to the existing with a "T" connection before the water strainer. Has anyone implemented this "improvement" or knows a reason not to do it? Given how I use my boat, often offshore, it sounds like a relatively easy "almost" insurance policy.

As an incidental he also recommended fuel additives to keep the water/alcohol in our diesel from rusting the tips of the injectors. Has anyone else heard about this?

Ummm, I put just a splash of water in my Scotch, but not in my diesel tank.
So, where is this water-alcohol in your injector tips coming from?

I'm not a fan of drilling extra holes in my boat, particularly below the waterline. I regularly clean my sea strainer and have found all sorts of things in there; mostly weed, but even some stuff that looks like jellyfish. I've never had a problem with a plugged water intake outside the hull. I've cleaned off a few barnacles, but nothing more. I'm curious, what is it that's clogged your intake multiple times?

As far as fuel additives, I use none and have had no fuel system or injector issues after 1200 engine hours.

I took the Mac Boring diesel class. They are the Yanmar distributor in the Northeast. Larry, the instructor, who has worked on Yanmar engines forever says the only thing you should put in your tank is FPPF diesel fuel treatment and nothing else. Not to hijack the thread, but does Larry, or anyone else, use biocide additives? I add both conditioner and biocide and am wondering if you diesel experts think I am wasting $. Of course, this is noise in the money department. Change on the floor, figuratively and literally.

Biobor JF is what is used on all of Sea Span vessels as a fuel treatment , comes in 5 gal and one gal containers
may be able to purchase smaller containers at a marina.
For my 300 l tank I use 2 oz.
