Sorry about this, it's a sort of duh! question.
I have a 2019 RT-31 with the genny noted in the title above. I would like to service it for the first time (for me). However, I am having trouble finding some of the service point locations.
I have taken off the top of the sound shield and found the top of the oil dipstick. I took off the port side panel where the water coolant hose enters, but I'm not sure the water pump is down there. I don't want to unnecessarily take off any more of the sound shield without knowing which one to take off. The service manual shows a cutout on page 22, but it is not clear which cover to take off.
I hope someone who has done this can give me step by step instructions (starting with shield removal), particularly any tricks for what may be hard parts, like accessing and taking apart the water pump to change the impeller.
Thanks

I haven't serviced this generator, but earlier I found this YouTube channel where an owner recorded his dealer servicing the Onan Generator and the Volvo D4. Maybe this will help.

To access the generator to perform oil, fuel filter and impeller service you need to remove 3 panels. The top, the side panel and the rear panel as they are orientated on my 2011 R29. The rear panel is the panel where the fuel line enters and the positive and negative terminal is located. The rear panel is attached with 5 (I think) 10mm hex bolts. hope that helps. The service manual is pretty good at describing how to remove and replace the impeller. I replace the impeller every 2 years and the oil and fuel filters every year. If you go too long on the filters, they become very hard to remove. The first time I replace the fuel filer, I had to remove the fuel filter manifold from its mount and take it home and put it on a vice in order the remove the filter. I also replace the racor filter every year. Remember, there is an oil drain cock on the bottom of the generator to drain oil from the sump.

Thanks Bob.
Which side panel? The left or the right as you're looking at the front of the generator?
Where is the oil drain cock?

Here's a series of pictures from my 2011 R29. It sounds like you're referring to the front of the generator as the side with the control panel, so I'll use that as the reference point.

This is the right side of the generator, also the side where you can access the prime mover (engine)

You remove this panel by removing 5 X 10mm bolts identified by the red arrows. One bolt is obstructed by the exhuast hose. You might find it easier to remove if you remove the front access panel first.

You can ignore the stray red lines. I have red arrows pointing to the oil filter, fuel filter and the drain cock for the oil.

To use the drain cock, buy this 1/2" X 3/8" MIP adaptor and some 1/2" ID hose.

The red arrow points to the raw water pump. You have to remove the upper and lower hose and then remove the pump/pulley assembly. The maintenance manual describes the process. Fairly straight forward.

Impeller change instructions.

Make sure battery is off
Make sure seacock is closed
Remove generator access panels
Remove belt tensioner (13mm) bolt on top (bolt, flat washer & lock washer)
Remove bottom 13mm bolt holding water pump (bolt, spacer, flat washer, lock washer & nut)
Remove belt (Onan 0511-0197)
Remove hose clamp and hose on top holding pump up (5/16 socketdriver)
Remove hose clamp and hose on bottom of pump to remove it (5/16 socketdriver)
With water pump removed, place on flat surface and remove four bolts on the cover with 7/16” socket. Cover is odd shaped and can only go on one way. Keep lettering on cover outward
IMPELLER IS SPINNING COUNTERCLOCKWISE AS YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE BACK OF THE PUMP!
Remove impeller with needle nose pliers
Clean cover, pump edges, etc.
Remove thin rubber O-ring gasket with small regular screwdriver
Put some dish detergent on new impeller before replacing. It will run dry for a few seconds and this will help lubricate it.
Replace impeller ensuring the canes are turning counterclockwise as you are looking at the back of the pump.
Replace O-ring

Reinstall pump cover with four bolts
Reinstall hose and clamp to pump
Reinstall the bottom bolt, spacer, flat washer, lock washer and nut to pump assembly loosely
Reinstall the tensioner bolt loosely
Reinstall belt around pulleys and tighten
Replace top hose and clamp
Start generator and inspect for leaks, etc.
Reinstall generator access panels
