Shore power inlet cover corrosion

Hello Everyone

Our Cutwater 24 has the Furrion stainless shore power inlet. After less than one year it is showing a lot of corrosion. Has anyone else had the same problem? If so, what can be done? Is this a warranty issue?

Sean: Are you talking about the cover or the receptical connection? If connection I'd suggest cleaning it up and then apply a coat of dielectric grease to prevent corrosion moving forward. If its the cover I have no experience.

As Jim posted, is the corrosion on the flap lid or inside the outlet receptacle ? If by corrosion you mean "rust" then I would agree that this should not be occurring in such a short time you've mentioned, although there's always a little brown stuff that seems to always collect on the chromed parts. The above URL link does indicate the Furrion is constructed with 'good' SS, so it should not be rusting as you've mentioned. Using a little ON/OFF solution and a tooth brush see if the rust can be removed easily.

I experienced the same problem. Then I discovered that the cover comes with a thin transparent sticker that you can barely see applied on its outside surface. It's this sticker that looks "corroded". Some "Goo Off", or similar product, and a little patience and your shore power cover will shine like new. Magic! 😉

I replaced my shore power receptacle on my R-25 (Classic) with a SmartPlug because of its superior features IMO.

i may do the same for my new 2018 R-27/OB as I prefer the simply push and lid snap securing the pins for the SmartPlug vs. a push and twist to secure the pins. The push and twist activity will over time tend to get loose and IMO insecure.

Hello Sean,

Now may be the time to convert your shore power inlet to a much safer design. Consider that the majority of boat fires are electrical in origin.

Switching to a SmartPlug is a DIY job and significantly safer design than the standard plug inlet design.

Or, buff off the rust and go with what you have...

Thanks Boatagain, this was indeed the problem. Had to take a really close look to see that there was a film of plastic. Cleaned up the cap and it looks much better, although having moisture trapped for so long definitely seems to have permanently dulled the surface. The factory or dealer should remove the plastic.

Not sure if RT has the same, but the shore power connector on our 2019 C30 is round, whereas all the smart plugs I've seen are square. Does anyone know whether it's an easy swap to install the smart plug on a C30? Or perhaps there is a round version?

FWIW, our surveyor also highly recommended them but wasn't sure how difficult the swap would be, given the shape.

It is a fairly easy swap. The holes are in the same spot on the receptacle. The harder part of the nstallation is replacing the end on the cord, but that isn't bad either. I used a little glycerin to slide the rubber boot on the cord and that made it easier.
