Hello fellow tuggers,

I have been thinking for a while about doing something to resolve the lack of a shower installation on our tug model. I really enjoy a daily shower and washing in the cold lakes around here (Canada) is not always fun...

I was thinking about using a stainless steel tubing system that would be set up on the swimming platform (part of the rail) along with a privacy curtain that would snap to the enclosure , and very important it has to be collapsible so that it does not interfere with the normal use of the swimming Platform during the day. I saw that Coleman makes a hot water portable shower system that works with propane which is not too big to store Under the seat in the cockpit. All that we would need to do is to use the water from the lake and have instant hot water. Anyone have done something similar? I know that some folks shower in the cockpit, but I thing that the bilge pump will not function well after a while with the soap.

What do you think about this project?

Hi Pat. We used a Zodi propane fired portable water heater on a previous sailboat. It was a trimaran, so it was easy to shower out on one of the nets, where the water would run right through. We have used a solar shower on the swimstep of of our CD-25, but not with an enclosure around it... I would think one of those pop-up enclosures might be a bit "tippy" on the swimstep of an R-21.

Back to the Zodi: it provided an adequate warm shower, but we found it worked best to use the container the Zodi comes in to hold water so you could "recirculate" the water to get it warmer faster. More effort, but warmer than running the water pick-up into the lake water.

All things considered, a solar shower was less fuss. If you don't have enough sun available, you can always heat some water in the cabin, then add it to the solar bag.

We bought the same Zodi Jim's link takes you to at the Bass Pro Store. We have used it at anchor on the swim platform - no enclosure - just in our bathing suits. Recirculating the water for a minute does get it as hot as you want.

When on the Trent canals in Sept. we were often the only ones there. We found it easier to just bring a container full of hot water from the locks washroom. Saved our propane! You can buy the Zodi pump and shower hose by itself quit reasonable - the heating coil and burner is the expensive part.

Regards, Rob

This is what I did for a shower on Pearl. I added a T before the sink, ran a line back to the fender locker, and added a transom shower. The shower came with a 8' hose and easily reaches the swim platform for a cool shower.

yeah, I like this Idea, in the summer month, the water in the tank is not too cold either!
