My shower sump has run continually (when fuse is in) since we got the boat last year. I’ve tried a number of things to clean it out without success. Just took it all apart to see if float switch was clogged, and it appeared to be fine. However, pump still runs continually, even when there is no water in sight. Is it possible that the pump is the issue ( stuck on)?

Bad float switch.

Thank you! Appreciate it.
Bob

This has been a common problem. The worse part is if it engages when you are not on the boat and it kills your battery. I installed a manual switch in the head and engage it when I want the shower to drain. This is a common practice in many boats. However, this can only be done on the Ranger models that use the sump only for the shower. Some of the other models use the same sump for the air conditioner condensate so it has to be active all the time.

Thanks Brian and Mike.
I replaced the float switch and all is well at present. The pump works only for shower so if I have this problem again I will install a manual switch.

Hi, I just got my 2012 R27 3 months ago. Two weeks ago in preparation for winterizing (live in CT) I poured 1/2 gallon of water down the shower drain and the pump came on and worked fine. Today I poured in antifreeze (full gallon) and nothing happened except the drain overflowed into the head. The weather has been above freezing so no issue there. I checked the house fuse for the Shower Pump labeled on the House distribution block in the generator compartment and the fuse was intact.

Any ideas? Also, where is the shower sump and its pump located? And how do you gain access to it?

Thanks in advance, GF

Hello,

I believe the shower sump is located under the head sink cabinet, there should be an access panel under the sink that gains access to the sump pump box below the floor. You could have a bad float or a bad pump, typically the pump will blow the fuse if the pump is bad but not if the float is bad. Typically the water just overflows with a bad float switch. Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Kevin Lamont

The float switches on these pumps are notorious for failing just due to aging. If you replace it I recommend wiring in a manual cut-off switch because when they fail in the on position the pump will run until it kills the battery or starts a fire.

Thanks Kevin. I'll take a look now that the boat is on the hard.

Good advice pleeson, which I shall heed.

Naturally after I contorted myself and got the sump cover off, the sump was only half full. The float must have activated when I wasn't around and emptied. Add added more fluid to see if it was now working and .... no. But at least it was full of anti-freeze. A job for the spring now.
