IMTRA, the supplier of Side Power thrusters for Ranger Tugs, has a great tool to assist in removal and installation of the motors and gear legs. This is a big help when working on the rear thruster. The tool is a 6mm ratcheting wrench. It seems to be very well built and the 6mm socket is reversible so that it works for both "on" and "off". The gearing is very fine so you don't need much of a swing to be effective. It is small enough to work in cramped conditions.

The photo at the top of this post is -- if I've followed all of Bruce Moore's instructions correctly -- is a photo of my wrench. Thanks, Bruce.

If you are going to order one from IMTRA, I suggest that this order include a couple years supply of zinc's and shear pins as the pricing seems pretty good and you can never have enough of them, can you?

Mark Raeder at IMTRA was very helpful to me in my current thruster project. Andrew Custis was -- well, just the great Andrew we have all come to love and lean on! Thanks to both of you.

I'd also like to pass thanks to Herb on Willie's Tug. Your post on the rear thruster was very helpful in my wee project. With this wrench you might not have to move into the transom any more.

Thanks Dave, I did have the tool, no way I could have done it without 😀. Ranger supplied one with my 27.

I checked the goody bags that came with our R27 but could not find the tool. After reading the "fun" stories of others replacing or checking the shear pins I ordered a tool, spare shear pins, and anodes from Imtra. They are now stored with the other spare parts on board.

I also will not use the thruster in choppy water, apparently the shear pin does not last long if you let the thruster suck air then drop back into the water.

I agree with your "rough water" comment. I actually only use mine when the transmission is in neutral as I find the power of the propeller overwhelms the power of the thruster. I believe my first "crash" was when I thought the bow thruster would actually turn the boat while in forward. Fortunately, a very minor crash.

A rope wound around the back propeller of my R25SC. I was able to remove this rope. Now the engine works but the helix does not turn any more. I am going to have to make change a part of the propeller, but I do not still know what. You can say to me if you have already known this incident and what part had changed you?
Thanks to all.
Hello of Corsica.

Hi Claud, Hopefully all you did was shear the pin. Look carefully in your manuals that came with your boat and you should have one, and maybe the tool necessary to remove the motor unit buried down in the bilge at the stern of your boat. I will post a link to to a thread that details the steps necessary to change the pin in my next post.

A thank you sincere and warm for your e-mails and your help.
But I thought that the change of the defective part was made by defusing the mask of the back propeller. By defusing the outside mask we reached the helix and the engine. I have to notice on my R25SC if we can reach this propeller by the locker of fishing in which you intervene.
Thank you for your opinion and still thank you for your messages.
Claude

Think you that I have to defuse the locker with fishing, to reach directly the engine of the propeller, as you make in your mail?
Still thank you.

Yes, Claude you do have to access the pin from inside the locker. You will be unable to access the pin from outside the boat at the gear box and propeller.

Ok.
Thank you so much.
I will tell to you the result in some weeks.
Have a good day!
Claude
