We use the Table Berth for our 3rd sleeping berth space rather than the 1/4 berth. One of the issues with the Table Berth is that the length is limited by the rear seat back. I made a small, simple, change to the hinge pin assembly so that the seat back can be removed without tools.

If interested you can see what was done here:

Note that this sits on what is mostly unused blog space for now.

I am using blog space that belongs to the Admiral to post my how-to's. Easier for me to use her space than to create my own, at least I thought ;-) Until she decides that change for housekeeping purposes is in order.

The earlier link no longer works so here is the revised link https://www.nwesterly.com/home/2018/3/3 ... ing-area-1

Growing pains in trade for free space ;-)

Jim: I'm a bit confused here.... The seat backrest does not go all the way down to the seat and leaves a good 6" of space. Why can't your daughter's feet slip through that space to gain the extra 12 " of leg room.

On our R-27/OB the seat is similar and I have no problem slipping my feet through that gap when I need to fully stretch out.

Hi Barry,

6" isn't a lot of space when you are trying to roll over in the middle of the night for one, and if a person sleeps on their side with their legs "stacked" then there just isn't enough space.

It could be argued that there might be enough space for a kid but my daughter is nearly 17, so she found the berth tight. I also plan on taking the boat farther North on several occasions and having this space work for an adult keeps folks out of my v-berth as well ;-)

The mod is simple and makes the space more flexible no matter what, and I really don't think that many people would find slipping their feet under that seat back a viable option.

Jim: fair enough....

One other thought might be to provide slots for the 3 bolt/screw heads so that by releasing them slightly would allow the backrest to be slid up a few inches to provide more space between its lower edge and the seat cushion surface.

Jim, I made your mod this morning. It took about 10 minutes. Now the backrest pops off in less than a minute with no hassle. The sleeping space is now 6' and wide open. It's perfect for us because we have friends/crew who cruise with us and this gives us flexibility. Thanks!

Steve,

I also cut the lip off of the back of the passenger seat to flatten out that berth space. It was tedious but pretty straightforward. I'll post that next week after I get back from the Waggoners Cruising the Inside Passage seminar, which is awesome !
