I recently installed the Sionyx Nightwave camera on my boat, but hadn't had an opportunity to test it until last night. For Mothers Day, I took the family out to dinner, by boat, to our favorite restaurant. The restaurant is 10 miles from my dock, and the route transits several crab pot mine fields, and then up a narrow winding shallow creek. When we finished dinner, it was already dark. I plugged the Nightwave into my Ipad and was blown away by what I was seeing. The image was clear and in color. The chart plotter laid out the course to go home, and the Nightwave gave me the confidence that I would see objects in front of the boat in plenty of time to avoid hitting them. The unit cost about $1500 and for me it was well worth it.

I've had the handheld Sionyx camera for years and I mount it when going out at night. It is impressive and like you, I use it for crab pot buoys. It is great to be able to see in color and just about as good as daytime. Takes the worry out of night time navigation.

I used the Sionyx Auroro Sport for 2 years and upgraded to the Nightwave over the winter. It is mounted on the mast and hardwired to the Garmin 943. Works great and I am extremely impressed with the video.

We have the Sionyx Nightwave mounted on the mast of our C-288- displays through the Garmin MFD. The image on a moon less night is incredible. Our 'channel' is marked with 1" PVC pipe that is 2' above water at high tide- can easily pick them up 50 yards away- even if you don't plan on being out after dark... you never know- one of the best 'safety' features you can add-

From the website seems like you can temporarily mount these on the dash? Anyone tried that? Too much reflection off the windows?

The same company makes a handheld version that can be mounted on a rail. It also streams to an iPad, iPhone or chart plotter. One benefit of this option would be having someone looking out holding the device while the helmsman can follow via streaming. Or it could also be mounted. They offer a kit with mounts for the device and a holder for an iPad. I’ll give a report after mine arrives. https://a.co/d/4btyuhX

I love my Sionyx Nightwave! It's a game changer for night boating.

@hwhayes - how did the handheld version work out for you?

SiOnyx view on my iPhone. Camera right behind it. View from the windshield is all the black you see.

Tom,
Thanks for the question. I only recently got to try the Sionyx on the boat the way I planned to use it. I put an iPad mount on the dash above the helm station and connected it to a usb port using the cigarette lighter socket on the dash. I put the Ram camera mount that came with the kit on the starboard rail just outside the pilots window. Linked the camera to the iPad via blue tooth and it performs wonderfully! It provides a great view ahead and much better than using the Sionyx hand held. Several advantages to this approach: the iPad screen size allows others to monitor the image even if they not at the pilot station, and the camera is within reach outside the window and can be easily adjusted. So far so good, stay tuned.

I am considering putting a Nightwave on the mast of our new 31CB, but I can't quite figure out which mounting option works well there. How did you mount yours?

I don't have Radar, so I mounted where the Radar would go and feed directly into my 8610

Looking to add this camera to our R23. Where did you route the cable after the fitting on the roof. Which panels do you need to remove to run them to the helm? Thanks in advance.
