Solar Question - Morningstar RM-1

Yes, do this in the following sequence.
Remove fuses from solar controller to each battery bank powered by controller.
Remove positive lead from solar panel to controller. Be careful not to touch any other wires with exposed end ,this has power from panel.
Wait one minute and reconnect power lead from solar panel to controller.
Reinstall fuses to each battery bank.

This is a reset method. If you are getting an error after this, there is a sequence to follow to get the error code and tell you the issue. The usual error is "missing remote temperature sensor" this is caused when water hits the terminal and closes the circuit out thus making the unit think it has been installed. When the water evaporates and the circuit is opened it thinks it is missing. The best way to avoid this in the future is to jump out the two terminals with some 16ga wire.

Good luck and let us know the outcome

Also it appears remote temp is already jumped, correct?

Yes it does look like your sensor is jumped out. And the unit sensor does look funky. Make sure there is no corrosion at the terminal connections and contact is being made with the jumper. Also make sure your error code is in fact for the remote sensor issue. It could very well be something else.

I would still try the reset and see what happens. There should be a lead coming from each of the positive battery terminals for house and engine. If you look carefully the wire should have a label on it signifying which bank it is and there should be an in line fuse there.

Where is your controller mounted? Anywhere near the gutter system and that can be an issue. I relocated mine on the hull wall so any water overflow from the gutter would not hit it. If it is in a protected area and it will not reset you may want to give Morningstar a call. I think there is a 3 year warranty on the controller and maybe even longer. They are very good with service and honoring the warranty.

Great info thank you.

Here is a link to the Morningstar Sunsaver Duo SSD-25 reset instructions

The reset procedure did not work for me and I'm going to purchase a new unit from Amazon $107 but posted the reset procedure here in case you need it.

Did you call Morningstar? They have a pretty good return policy and they may exchange your unit. I read the reset instructions, if you have the fuses on the batteries, which you should, removing them avoids having to unscrew the terminals. I also added an in line fuse to the solar lead to also avoid having to unscrew that lead as well. It is a bit easier and safer to remove fuses rather than unscrew all those terminals.

Good idea, I'll do that. I haven't called MorningStar yet. My plan is to get the new unit and try to get this fixed and then RMA the older unit. I'll add it to my spare parts pile or help another tug one day. I also thought about using this unit at home with a small solar install I want to do.

Which fuses did you use?

Morningstar is great. They sent me a new one right away as the second owner of our tug. Five years is the warranty. Just email them the serial number and they'll send you an entire new unit with return shipping for the damaged one. Super easy to replace.

The leads to the batteries should already have fuses and for the one from the solar panel I used a 30 amp.

Thanks knotflying, I'll make that additional when I put the new unit in.

Update: new SSD-25 installed. All is working. Green light, remote monitoring, etc. confirmed voltage on both batteries.

Sent old unit to Morningstar for repair. Hopefully I get a repaired/new spare back. They say it is most likely my fault due to water damage but I keep my starboard storage compartment dry & clean so we will see.

And big kudos to Morningstar. They sent me a replacement unit. Big thumbs up to them and I plan on investing more than the $100 they just lost to keep me as a customer. Very satisfied with ranger and Morningstar service, thank you.

You may want to add some type of plastic shield above the unit to deflect any water that may run over the gutter system. In time you may have the same issue if you don't prevent that occasional water infiltration. On my previous post I mentioned where I relocated mine to avoid this issue.
