I finally broke down and got a portable freezer. Opens up a whole other aisle when we are shopping now. I can get ice cream and it is harder from our freezer then it is at the store. 🙂 It maintains 0 degrees Fahrenheit and will go down to -6 It is a real freezer with a compressor, runs off 110 or 12 volt. If you plug both lines in it switches to 110 when you have it automatically. 28 X 18 X 21 inches 60 lbs, made by Whynter. I have model 65. It can also function as a fridge if so desired... It can fit in the cave on the older 29's. I would advise getting the 45 which is slightly smaller. I found that a bit smaller would have fit easier in spots, but I thought I could use the extra space inside the freezer.
Here is a link if you are interested, Not real power hungry after it is down to temp.

Nice addition to Irish Mist, now I know who to get ice cream from!

I had bought one of these a few years ago for my sailboat. Other than being big and heavy, I can attest that it was rock solid reliable and very nice to have.

Not sure it would fit in a R-27 though. Might need to sell it and get a smaller model. There are several which have a quick-release bracket you can screw to the floor to keep it in place, yet remove it if needed.

I have this ice chest/freezer and it fits in the rear of the cave below the desk on the 27. It is really heavy, tho, so watch your back. I made things easier by removing the superfluous folding chair. Summer before last we returned to California with it full of vacuum sealed frozen salmon fillets from Cape Mudge off Quadra Island. A very successful fishing cruising trip. The amp draw is pretty significant, so you have to watch your batteries, but as long as you top them up every day you should be good. When we hauled the boat we hooked up the freezer to the truck batteries when traveling during the day, letting the boat batteries carry it overnight. These things are indispensable for long range cruising. Highly recommended!

This is the exact model we have also for use on our R25. It fits perfectly in the v-berth on the deck and we keep the v-berth cushions in (over it) when we use it. I ran a 12v cigarette lighter outlet and 110V outlet to the forward berth and plug both in. When 110V is present it runs off of that, when no 110V it automatically shifts to 12V. Pretty cool. It is a true sub-zero freezer and is energy efficient.

I have to say I have never in my life had any freezer work this good , .......Or cost as much 🙂 But it does what it says it does very well.
