The factory rep offered special discount on torqeedo electric outboards to Tugnuts. Sounds like at least $200. The new model weighs 30 lbs and is compared to a 4 horse gas outboard. New battery tech. If anyone is interested in it go on their web site, look it over and let me know. They have other neat products as well.

Thanks -- will give them a call as their online price info shows no such discount off normal retail pricing. How do they validate being a member of Tugnuts ?

Sounds like you went to a boat show !
Torqueedo electric outboards [ a German Company] is available through a bunch of normal everyday wholesale distributors and we can all call ourselves factory reps if we have a wholesale account with one of them . Any Ranger Tugs dealer should price one to you at a Tugnuts price if they have a service department and order parts. Thats called going the extra mile .

Baz,
Probably just tell them you are and seen it on the web site. Whether it is a good deal or not I am not sure. I know some of the guys have been talking about them. Marc the above dealer may do better than anyone. You would beat the $200 would you not,Marc?

Yup, Boat show, Palm Beach. Ranger was there along with American Tug. Mark was there. 1st time meeting him. Nice guy.

I have the new Torqeedo motor back ordered at West Marine. The first shipment goes to West Marine and should arrive this week. I am convinced that it will be just right for my new Ranger 21 after several lengthy conversations with the tech rep in the USA. I ordered a 2nd battery and charger as well. I figure that I can troll 2 mph for about 4 hours on one charge. No gas, no noise, no smell...what a deal.

Yep -- me also. I've ordered the

Torqeedo Motor Travel 801S 2 hp. Foldable electric outboard incl. LIMA high-performance battery, charger and travel bag, long-shaft version.

for my Portland Pudgy dinghy/tender.

Hey guys,

New to this forum, but I saw a post about the Torqeedo electric motor and wanted to chat.

I also just ordered one of the new models, the 1003. It doesn't come apart but on the plus side it is totally sealed (even submersible for an hour at 3 feet!) and I think they have beefed up a few things and added 100 watt-hours to the battery. I plan to use it as a backup on my Montgomery 17 sailboat in the Puget Sound as last week we had to abort a launch at the Port of Everett due to the our Yamaha 2.5 outboard having issues. I will have to see how the Torqeedo performs before I decide to abandon totally the Yamaha or maybe I will just always sail with both. I also want to experiment with solar sailing on windless days using a Koycera 135 watt panel (the Torqeedo website says it can push a 1.5 ton boat at 1.3 to 2 knots using a 62 watt panel.

That may be problematic. If wind & tide against you you may not make any headway.

Heh, with the 2.5 I don't make much headway either with the wind and current against me. That is what tide tables and charts are for (aside from the wind).

Oh, I just noticed you ordered the 801 and not the new 1003....any particular reason you wanted the foldability of the 801 over all the new improvements they have made in the 1003? (gps lcd readout of speed/battery life remaining, larger battery, completely submersible for up to 1 hour, 20% higher power, lower noise, zero corrosion, etc. etc.) All you really give up is the foldability and it is about 4 or 5 pounds heavier (but more rugged too).

btw, I think we are almost nieghbors (I live out by Monroe).

Very good question. I was not aware of the newer models mainly because I was focused on foldability, folded size, weight and the hand carry bag that the 801 offers.

The retail price for the Torqeedo Travel 503, Short/Long Shaft is actually less that the 801 (a diff of around $190) -- this is worth considering for sure.

The retail price for the more powerful Torqeedo Travel 1003, Short/Long Shaft is only $97 more than the 801, and again it's worth looking at.

My use of the Torqeedo will be infrequent and used exclusively with my Portland Pudgy dinghy/tender.

Given the close pricing for the 801, 503 and 1003 I will for sure give all three a closer look to see what makes sense for me and its intended use.

Thanks for bringing this issue to my attention. 🙂

BTW -- how much less noise does the 503 and 1003 make vs. the 801 ?

[Edit]
I've just cancelled my order with Portland Pudgy for the 801. They are having a hard time securing the motor and say it will likely take several weeks working with Torqeedo to establish their pricing which at this time is $1650 + S&H. I also see that http://jamestowndistributors.com is selling the 801 Long Shaft for $1474.04 on their web site. Portland Pudgy will have a hard time matching that price and even went as far to say that $1475 is what they would have to pay to get the motor so would not really make any money on the sale.

So, now I'm in a position to decide on 801, 503 or 1003 models.

May I ask -- who did you order your 1003 from and how much are you paying with S&H and if any sales tax is being applied ?

KTP: Just sent you a PM. Give me a call on number in the PM. Thanks...

I ordered it (and I get almost everything boating that is not a local quick trip to west marine) from defender boats (http://www.defender.com). I ordered it Sunday which was the last day of some sort of spring sale so I got it for about $100 off which was a sweet deal IMO ($1680 for the model 1003). They do not charge sales tax but they do charge a $25 hazmat fee plus shipping because of the lithium ion battery (although this battery is pretty safe technology). Unfortunately they are not getting the first stock until middle April but I think this is true for all vendors as this model just started shipping.

I was orginally looking into using a riptide trolling motor + battery, but after adding up the costs of an extra deep cycle, heavy gauge wiring, circuit breaker, drilling holes in the boat, etc, this Torqeedo 1003 with double the power output seemed like a no brainer. I think they really have a winner in the small boat market with this new model.

Here is the link to the model 1003 at defender: http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pat ... id=1350231

Rick(KTP): Thanks much for your information and the chat we had over the telephone today. You've convinced me and now my task is to see if I can secure the same pricing as you obtained. Wish me luck -- I have sent Email to them asking about the pricing so we shall see what they respond with -- hopefully tomorrow. I can wait to end of Apr if that is what it means. My one real question on the 503 and 1003 is the overall storage dimensions as I'd like to stow it in the starboard side locker in my R-25 cockpit 🙂 I think if the tiller arm removes I'll be in luck.

If anyone calls or e-mails this guy in the original post let us know what discount he is willing to give. Wefing has never come back with a quote. Come on Marc make a group price offer.

Yep -- waiting on pricing. I intend to order this week.

So what did you decide on? the 503 or the 1003?

Personally I would go with the 1003 if I were you guys...then in a real emergency you could push along your ranger tug at 3-4 knots to keep you off a lee shore if your main engine dies. Actually, I have never seen a ranger tug so really have no clue what their displacement is.

I have a 1003 on order from West Marine for my new EC21. I was able to understand the likely suitability for the EC21 due to the performance specs in the catalog that were derived from tests on a Dragon class sloop. The Dragon was the Olympic racing boat until they became too expensive to build in wood and the fiberglass "Soling" became the Olympic boat. I once owned an American Olympic team boat (it did not win) named "Snap Dragon" which was beautifully built of wood in Denmark by a famous builder of wooden Dragons, Borrison. It was a very lovely, but lightly built boat, and I sailed it for more than ten years with great pleasure, until it literally fell apart. The Dragon class is now quite popular in Europe built in fiberglass. But I digress; the point is as follows: the Dragon has an almost identical displacement to the EC21, and although the Dragon is 30 feet plus, it has about the same wetted surface as the EC21 on an even keel. When I figured all that out and looked at the specs of the tests on the Dragon in the Torqeedo catalog, I was sold on the concept of the 1003 as a trolling motor for the salmon I run charters for. My best (somewhat educated) guess is that the 1003 will be good with the EC21.

Best,

Andrew Holmes

Cool. I really hope the literature is at least half way correct because the more I read about this new revision the more I think it will work perfectly on my 17 foot sailboat.

I am going to test it with a 205 watt solar panel also and see how fast i can go on sun alone (when there is no wind for my sails). I think 3 to 4 knots will not be out of the realm of possibility.
