I read about the Speedseal on this forum so I did some research. It sounded like a good thing so I bought the kit from TOAD (http://shop.toadmarinesupply.com/ships_ ... ent=640470).

This is what I received:

Installation is VERY straightforward. I test ran the engine and NO LEAKS. Time will tell if it is worthwhile. Changing the raw water impeller or just inspecting it will now be MUCH quicker and simpler. No tools necessary to remove the coverplate.

Hi Dave: That is interesting. I also have made enquires of the company in UK and they responded to me quickly. I have yet to purchase one, but after seeing your comments I will certainly do something about it now. There is no Speedeal rep here in Australia, unfortunately, so it will mean shipping costs to be added, but I will just have to wear that, I guess. Incidentally, noting that different model vessels/engines have different size Speed Seals, what part number/model number did you use to order yours? RHAPSODY is a 2010 model boat, with a 3YM30 engine too. Regards

The model is "D2L" according to TOAD Marine Supply where I bought it. The link in my post above takes you to the page for the Yamnar 3ym30 specific model.

Hi Dave,

I am assuming you have the same Johnson raw water pump that I have but would you mind posting the model number from the original front cover of the pump?

My pump shaft seal is leaking after 550 hours and I am going to replace it with a new pump and thought that this would be a good opportunity to add a SpeedSeal cover. I will likely rebuild the old pump and keep it as a spare.

I also want to let you know that I have been following your mods with great interest and appreciate your willingness to share them here on TugNuts. You have done some very nice work and made some important upgrades to the systems on your vessel. I may be picking your brain as I embark on some of the same upgrades on my tug.

Thanks,

Eric

Hello Eric,

Thank you for the kind remarks.

Have you looked at pbase marine tutorial on rebuilding a raw water pump. The model pump he rebuilds is NOT the same as ours but it is very similar, so the basic principles are the same. Look here (http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/raw_water_pump)

Anyway, it doesn't look that difficult to rebuild the pump (if a rebuild kit is available).

I'll need to look at the old pump cover plate for the model number.

Hello Eric,

My pump is a Johnson model F4B-903 as pictured below:

Is that what you have?

Hi Dave,

Thanks for taking the time to post the photo. As it turns out I do have the same pump even though I run a 2006 Yanmar 3YM20. Apparently the 3YM15, 3YM20 and 3YM30 all run the same raw water pump part number F4B-903. I also want to thank Stevan47 who also sent me a PM confirming the part number on the pump on his 21-EC.

After doing some homework of my own, yesterday I ordered the SpeedSeal Life kit directly from SpeedSeal at 1-800-675-1105. I spoke with Alex who was extremely friendly and helped me to verify my given application and then placed my order. I was able to purchase SpeadSeal Life kit for $89.00, 2 additional thumbscrews for $9.60 and a replacement friction disc set for $18.00. Shipping was $9.70 so my total order was only $126.30.

If anyone else is interested in the SpeedSeal cover kits I would highly recommend dealing directly with Alex at SpeedSeal. The experience was friendly, informative and easy and the factory direct pricing is the best on the internet.

The SpeedSeal Life price page can be seen here http://www.speedseal.com/SpeedsealLife/ ... prices.htm

The SpeedSeal Life order page can be seen here http://www.speedseal.com/SpeedsealLife/LifeOrder.htm

Just to be clear, I am in no way affiliated with this company just an extremely satisfied customer. I will post again once my cover kit arrives next week and I have the product in hand.

Indeed Eric, that is a good value. From TOAD I paid 113.33 for the SS Life kit including 2 spare thumb screws. Plus shipping. So ordering directly from Speed Seal is cheaper.

Thanks for the heads up.
