Ah, a wonderful spring afternoon on Lake Allatoona; far beyond the polar vortex and pollen vortex, perfect time to grill some kebabs, accompanied by yellow rice and a mixed green salad, along with some Chardonnay. This after dodging several phalanxes of jet skis to get to an isolated cove to anchor in.

After dinner and just as twilight is coming on, and it's real quiet on the water and in the surrounding woods, both of us can't help but think of the Civil War battle that was fought here. And as we weigh anchor and motor slowly back to the dock we start whistling "When Johnny Comes Marching Home".

Here's some interesting history of this area and battleground:

And some history behind the saying "Hold the Fort"

Perhaps our next boat we'll name "Gone with the Tug"

Bill, glad to read that you're out on the water. Say how is the water level in Lake Allatoona this spring? I seem to recall because of the draught over the last few years that water levels were down, does this affect Lake Allatoona and of so by how many feet or inches?

Jim

Hi Jim:
Great to be out on the water again.

Winter 2012/13 the lake was down 17+ ft, but filled back up to 9 ft over full summer pool by Memorial Day 2013, actually flooding some beaches and campgrounds.

This winter it was down about 12-13 feet and is now almost at full summer pool.

The good news is that Lake Lanier is full and should provide plenty of water down the Chattahoochee for Marc Grove's oysters in Apalachicola.

Too bad we cant ship the excess out west to the really parched states.

Here's a link to the Nws GA lake level page:
