Spurting fuel when starting engine

A "baffling" possibility.....I've read where some off-road and circletrack racers pack their fuel tanks with "whiffle" balls (golf ball size) to prevent fuel slosh..I imagine it would negate the fuel guage and displace a small amout of capacity though. On a boat with an exposed plastic tank, where the fuel level can be seen through the tank walls, it may be do-able. Packing a tank with short pieces of thin-wall PVC pipe might be an option ?

I also seem to remember that about 30 years ago a company was selling gas cans filled with coarse bronze wool to render then fire safe and to also prevent sloshing...I think they were available through Canadian Tire stores for a while.

Anyone out there feel like "experimenting"??

rt11002003: Now that al;l sounds very reasonable to me. The lesson learned here I think is to avoid overfill or filling tank to its limit. If fuel gauge indicates 30 gals to fill then fuel up with say ONLY 25-27 gals and stop. I also like Andrews solution for $25. Thanks... 🙂
