Hi;
My Garmin 5212 is presently off for repairs, so I have been using my ipad with navionics software for navigation. What I don't have is a depth reading without the 5212. Can I use the transducer that the 5212 uses with a stand alone gauge? I am going to use the ipad for backup navigation, and want to have a method of being able to read the depth as well.

Thnks

I don't think so. There are hand held units for a spot check or redundancy.

I use a Hawkeye depth sounder for redundancy and for use when at anchor. It uses only 0.1A, so one can run it all night without concern for its power usage. It has its own display and the transducer can be mounted forward of the standard one (on my R25). Both of the units (my other one is a Raymarine Multifunction display) cannot be used at the same time since the transducers are mounted side by side and therefore there is cross talk from the transducers, but that is not a problem for me. If my Raymarine depth sounder ever went out, I may have to disconnect the transducer if it is still trying to send out signals.

My Hawkeye transducer stopped working a while back and I found that although the Raymarine transducer was the same unit, the connectors were different. I was hoping to share one transducer with two separate displays - but no go.
