My 2009 R25 Classic came with a Standard Horizon GX1500s VHF/DSC radio. Very nice radio that still works great!
But (there always seems to be a but) the prior owner had a Transport Canada issues MMSI number. I wrote Transoprt Canada and sent them the CPC-2-3-07 Annex A form to have the old MMSI number cancelled.
I just received my new MMSI number from the FCC to go with my new expensive ($215) station license fee. I knew from past experience that I could not simply change the MMSI number on the GX1500s myself. Sending the GX1500s back to SH for a reset was going to cost $53 plus return shipping and take over a month. More $s sunk into a good but 7 year old unit made me a bit uncomfortable. So, do I have other options? A new VHF radio?
My biggest concern about getting a new VHF/DSC radio was not wanting to take a jigsaw to the panel to change the existing cutout (6.3"x2.52") so I started looking around for VHF radios that would fit. I also wanted to "upgrade" to a unit with an internal GPS if possible.
I ended up ordering a SH GX2200 Matrix VHF/DSC with both internal GPS and AIS in for $319 at the gps store. This radio gets pretty good reviews at amazon and other sites. SH is currently offering a $40 rebate so that brought my net cost down to $279. And best of all, it fits my existing cut out. I'm looking forward to having both GPS coordinates and AIS traffic available on the display.
The installation wiring should be pretty simple since access is so easy. Now to put the GX1500s on eBay for a buyer who needs a good radio but doesn't need an MMSI number.....
Just thought I would share for the possible benefit of anyone who is looking to replace their GX1500s unit.
