We were out this weekend and I opened that compartment to get a line out and it was 1/3 full of water. The stuff I have in there knocked off a fitting on the water heater. No biggy, fixed it in 5 minutes. In doing so, I noticed there is no drain? The water seems to eventually leave that space, but why not add a drain? I'm thinking of the aft inboard corner and run a hose somewhere. Maybe put a "Y" in a cockpit drain? Has anyone done this? I don't want to just drill a few holes.

In the starboard compartment of my R-27 has a small, maybe 7/16 inch hole that drains from the compartment to the engine compartment and bilge. I found mine clogged with debris. Same for the drains from the stern thruster compartment. You can run a stiff wire or dowel through there. Try a wet shop vac too from the whine compartment side and see if that clears it up. Let us know what you find.

Good to know. I will go in search of the drain before trouble starts. A helpful post. Thanks.

I will do the same thing thanks for the info. Never had any water there but sure will check the drain hole 😀

I never saw standing water in the starboard compartment because what little water that was there was below the plywood "shelf" or base. I could not access the starboard compartment side of the drain hole because it sits below that shelf and I did not want to remove screws to satisfy my curiosity, yet. I did get some drainage by vacuuming the hole but not a significant amount. I periodically check for clearance/drainage of all those holes to be sure they do what they are designed to do. They are small and can clog if paper or some other form of detritus gets in there. You do not want that stearn thruster to get wet.

On the R21-EC, I would get standing water under the aft bench seat and on the aft step by the bench seat. I drilled a 3/8" hole on each side (port and starboard) and that solved that problem. They are called weep holes.

I also get standing water on the aft gunnel. I would drill weep holes there also, but the diesel fill hole is there also, and I am afraid if I got an overflow of diesel, I would end up with diesel in the bilge - which is not a good thing. You do not want a diesel fire in the bilge or pump diesel over the side along with the bilge water.

Before you drill any holes, make sure you know what is on the other side. You do not want your drill bit going into a wire bundle, or fuel/hydraulic lines. Also you want to know where the water will drain to.

I had this same exact issue on my new 2010 R-25 (Classic). At first I was concerned I had a hull leak or something close to that for heavens sake.

Yes, there's a seep hole right up against the transom that needs to be clear. This hole allows errant water to drip/flow through to the the engine bilge where it gets handled by the bilge pump in that area.

In my case, I asked Andrew about this at one of the RT meetings and he knew immediately what the cause was. He asked for a wire coat hanger... he then straightened it out and then lay on his belly with his head almost disappearing into the aft section of the cockpit's starboard locker. He was poking the extended wire coat hanger into the seep hole to clear any factory assembly crud. This did the trick and I've not had water in that locker area since. 🙂

I kept the wire coat hanger as part of my toolkit. 😉

I suspect there's a seep hole on the port side as well, but it is hidden and quite likely difficult to access because of where the 4 batteries are located. So far, I've not noticed any water on the port side, but if I did, I would search out the seep hole first thing.

I kind of knew the answer. I was looking for other input. Thanks for all the responses. I think I will install a drain with a grill over top of it. IMO, every time you poke all that crud into the bilge, it's building up down there. I would prefer to scoop it out with my fingers and throw it out. I usually have my pug on board, plenty of hair. My cockpit drains plug up as well. I clean them out every time I wash down the cockpit as part of my routine. So, now I will have one more to clean out.
