I've just finished reading the "A REPORTER AT LARGE" article "Thicker Than Water" in The New Yorker, Feb 10, 2014 edition.
It makes quite a strong point for staying with your boat when it gets into trouble, and in this case capsized due to a 12-footer. I found it interesting reading.
