stern thruster runs as soon as power is on

i just replaced the shear pin in my 31 stern thruster( need smaller hands) and as soon as i turn on the battery switch to the stern thruster, it starts. If i unplug the multi pin cable from controller and turn on battery, it doesnt automatically start. Called tech support at side power and they think it might have something to do with the remote control? (which was not powered when it turns on by itself) Perhaps the relay that sits under the joystick?

anyone have history with this issue that can provide some guidance?

I had this issue. It was the control box on the thruster. This should help you diagnose: https://www.jpcdirect.com/side-power-thruster-trouble-shooting-guide/. I replaced it but the original control box circuit board was dirty. If you have a sealed model with a black case secured by a lot of bolts, this is for ignition protection, but they were installed on Rangers to address water intrusion issues. Sidepower says you need to return these for service, but as long as you aren't using a gasoline engine (aka using diesel 🙂) you can service these the same way as in the link, you just need to remove the cover to access the relays/control board of the thruster.
