Stern-to Docking on an R23 OB

Hi All,

We're enjoying our new R23 and are getting ready for our first overnighter. When we had our 28' sailboat we usually stayed on moorings, but with the R23 I want to be on a dock. There are a lot of marinas around Cape Cod and the islands that have only pylons (no finger docks) that you have to dock perpendicular. I'm wondering how that will work with the outboard on the stern. It seems we will be too far from the dock to step off the swim platform. Going bow-to doesn't seem great either since it's not easy to get on and off from the bow.

Has anyone come up with a good solution?

I find this question very interesting being we are on the verge of taking possession of our R27-OB. We are already registered for the September rendezvous at Roche Harbor, and we opted to not be a part of the President's Club where you Med tie to the dock. Being this is our first outboard, I didn't even think about stern-in tie with an outboard.

So here's my question to y'all: are there any R23's or R27-OB's signed up for the President's Club this September? How do you plan to "bridge the gap"? Is this typically the boater's, club's or marina's issue to resolve?

I believe one or more RT-23 and/or R-27/OB boats were moored up with the President's Club crowd last year at Roche - Mediteranian-Style mooring. I cannot recall how the owners of these boats disembarked but as all the boats were stern in and tied together I suspect the owners simply boarded adjacent boats to get to the dock.

It's maybe hard to see, but look at the last photo -4 for the R-27 'Build Your Boat' photo show taken presumable at nighttime.

I asked Sam Bisset about the R-27/OB mooring stern in with the President's Club crowd of boats and was told it would be difficult. However, some did as best I can recall.

We we're part of the presidents club last year with our 23 and it was handles by simply tying off to the neighboring boats as well as the dock. Entry and exit was through our neighbors but we got to meet some great folks that way.

We did end up moving but only because my daughter wanted to be a part of the crab Derby and tying and untying requires your neighbors help, and they were off having fun somewhere. Roche simply gave us another spot.

For a gangplank, would you lash it to the swim platform and or dock? Where would you stow it when you are underway?

Any suggestions for ready-made ones? Or should I build my own?

Note that at Oak Bluffs Marina on Martha's Vineyard, where we were this weekend, the slip is against a ~10' high sea wall with a ladder so gang plank wouldn't work unless you could align with the ladder and the plank has hooks to grab a rung of the ladder. Bow-to could work but it is awkward climbing to the bow and reaching for the ladder. We opted for mooring this time and avoided the issue.

I see you are in RI, welcome aboard. GANSETT RANGER is docked in Warwick cove. There will be a rendezvous next month in New Bedford MA. Floating dockage so no issues for your boat. Here’s the info:
