Hi All,

Moria and I have an opportunity to tow our 2006 R-21 Classic to Bradenton, FL (West Coast) next month. Once there we will be staying with family who have a slip on the Manatee River and this slip has a lift. Having never used a lift before, my question is how do we determine if the bunks on the lift are already in the right position to support the hull without doing any damage or dropping the boat off the lift? This lift is sometimes used by a family friend who has a C Dory 25, so he currently has the bunks set up for his boat. The bunks on the lift are the standard 2" x 8" set vertically in their brackets.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Eric

We stored our Classic, the original Willie's Tug on a sling lift. The bunks lift should not be a problem. I would just float the boat above the bunks and start up to see where it would fit. You may need to move the bunks slightly, but if it lifts a CDory now, it maybe just about right for your R21. The CD 25 weighs more than your R21, so you should be fine. Compare your trailer to the lift bunks. You just want to be sure that you keel will clear the supports for the bunks on the lift.

Good Luck,

Here are a couple of pictures to see how ours fit on the slings. The CD25 is a bit wider, so the bunks may have to be moved in a bit, should be easy to do.

IMO, setting the bunks on the lift to the dimensions of the bunks on your trailer would be ideal.

I currently have the boat on a cradle lift with the bunks set the same as the trailer. The cradle lift requires at least 18 inches more water depth to get the boat on and off and where I live the water depth at times is too shallow. My thinking is the sling lift sits directly on the bottom so I gain 18 inches. I have heard the sling lift pressure over time can distort the hull.
thanks for the replies,

Karl
