I would welcome a recommended mail order source for Volvo yellow anti-freeze for our D3.

I haven't been ablle to find one either....there were sources a while back but, but they have all seemed to have dissaapeared. The pricing was varying quite a bit... from outrageous to unbelievable. It may have become a dealer only item.

Better make sure this is the right stuff. I did not see any other type listed. Probably better to check with a dealer or Andrew Custis. I use this site for parts and they seem to be good. I think there have been fairly recent changes with what Volvo has used for anti freeze.

Firstly, Volvo doesn't make this stuff. They have just relabelled another product. Have a look at the Antifreeze/Coolant cross reference chart at Volvoclub.org.uk

Slater's Yacht Service (the outfit that Reed Yacht Sales recommends) shipped me two gallons along with the oil sample kits for my engine oil and transmission fluid. Not cheap, but it was the Volvo product.

I've been looking into this...
VP does have two coolants, green which is traditional inorganic acid technology (for the inhibitors) and yellow (VCS) which is new organic acid technology. VP's part numbers have changed..P/N 2145012 has been replaced by P/N 22567295. An internet search with this part number will yield several different suppliers.... There does seem to be some other products that cross reference with Volvo VCS:

Shell Rotella Ultra Extended Life Coolant (Yellow, Heavy Duty, Organic Acid, Extended Life)

Chevron Delo Extended Life NF (Yellow, Heavy Duty, Organic Acid, Extended Life)

Peak FINAL CHARGE® Global Extended Life Coolant / Antifreeze (Red, Heavy Duty, Organic Acid, Extended Life)

I probably wouldn't mix any of these, but with a complete cooling system flush and fill, these products seem to be reasonable substitutions.

You are correct in not wanting to mix the anti-freezes. We have been seeing some problems with incompatible anti-freezes being mixed. When incompatible types are mixed they will gel and begin to plug the coolers on the engine. The only way to get the gel out is to remove the coolers and have them cleaned, then do a complete flush of the cooling system. The Volvo Penta VCS anti-freezes is expensive (I don't know who is making it) but it is a good extended use anti-freeze. The new aluminum alloys in engines are forcing all manufacturers to switch to new more expensive coolants.

We have in the past sent the anti-freeze via UPS or USPS to customers who cannot find it locally.

The local VP dealer up here doesn’t even carry the VP antifreeze. Tried to hand me a gallon of no name antifreeze that I politely refused. I have resorted to using the Amsoil low toxicity antifreeze (Propylene Glycol Antifreeze & Coolant -ANT) I’ve used it in all my other vehicles and equipment with no issues and checked with Amsoil before using it. I’m not suggesting using it over VP antifreeze, but it is an option ... At least it is a low toxicity/biodegradable antifreeze I can always get my hands on.
