we are looking at a 2017 Ranger21EC tomorrow. We have had boats for years but this will be our first experience with a Ranger Tug. What are experiences on getting a survey or sea trails done, worth the money and time? The boat looks pristine and has been stored inside. 460hours so barely used. It is hard to do normal activities with Covid, so the seller may not want to take us for a sea trial. What are problem areas that a survey could expose if any? Thanks for all input to make our decision easier.

Always get a survey. its like a house inspection. You may never know what could be wrong even with a good looking boat. as for what could be wrong is an unknown. you may just get a list of very minor things to fix to something major like needing an engine replacement to major hull cracks.

Always, always, always get a survey with sea trial when buying a used boat! No matter how nice the boat looks, there could be issues that even the current owner may not be aware their existence. Some issues may be small but some could cost thousands to remedy. After four years of use, things could have happened.
Just ask the owner of LemonAde, who bought a “pristine” R27 sight unseen that had substantial hull cracks below the waterline. That’s an extreme example of course but you never know.
Lots of good surveyors up in your area. Ask around. If the sellers not willing to let a professional surveyor on the boat, even with Covid, I’d walk away from making a purchase.
