Swim Step Door Lock

The lock on my swim step door is very loose and sometimes opens while under way. Has anyone else had this problem and know of a solution?

Depends on the type of lock you have. If yours is a sliding bolt into an eye and looks like this:

You could try putting a slim wood shim or washer under one of the corners holding the sliding rod to make tension on it as it slides into the eye on the transom. G

Last two boats had this problem, but only when trailering, not in the water. Tells you the boat bounces more on the trailer than in the water. Solution is duct tape over the latch knob when trailering. 🙂

Our door rattled a bit while the engine is running. I stuck a cabinet door rubber bumper to the swim step door which stopped the rattle plus the latch seems to be more snug and doesn’t come unlatched.

The gate on my 2012 C26 rattles like a '73 Lada. Sliding bolt registers into a 3/8 hole drilled in the fiberglass, not a steel clasp. There must have been some sort of grommet originally? Tried tensioning the door with rubber stick-on bumpers, they last a single voyage; now I'm jamming a key-floater sponge into the blasted thing every time I close it.

thanks, this post reminded about that problem and i was going to take off the latch and weld a longer arm in hope that the extra weight would keep it from bouncing open. Also the short piece doesn't offer much to grab on to and open if its a tight fit. Also thought about a loop as to eliminate getting stabbed by a longer piece.

I replaced mine with this: http://www.marinepartdepot.com/ststdohawitu.html. The padlock eye mount can be turned to effectively 'lock' the door and prevent it from opening.
