Any app which constantly polls will use power, even if it is running in the background, especially if you have active alerts. I'd suggest shutting the app down after you use it. Double-click the home button. This will reveal all of the apps which are running. Swipe Tapatalk up and it will shut it down. It will boot quickly next time you want to use it.
I double-click home and shut down apps I'm not using at least once a day on both my iPhone and iPad. I'm always surprised by the number of apps I have running in the background.

Bruce: Some of the newer iPhones do not have a home button and because of this the termination of an Application is performed differently.
