I understand that taxes on diesel fuel used for pleasure boating is waived. In addition, diesel fuel that is sold without tax is colored to indicate tax has not been paid.

It appears that at my Marina this tax is not removed at the pump and the diesel is not colored.

I've done a little research on this and it seems one must file a claim with one's State DMV in order to have the tax refunded based on submitted fuel purchase invoices.

What is the full story on this -- especially in the WA state? Thanks.... 🙂

Taxes on diesel are Federal and State, right? Does a refund claim to WA cover both? I note that the refund of taxes must be at least $20 before a claim can be made. When I buy gas at a gas station the Fed/State taxes (based on gallons and not a percentage of price) aren't itemized. Are the taxes one buys at Marina itemized on the invoice? Also, taxes can vary up or down, right? Thanks for your Ref. 🙂

Taxes don't change very often, they are a certain amount (cents) per gallon and from the number of gallons you can figure out the tax. Not sure about state/fed refunds. The form should show you, I didn't open it, I live in VA and have not bothered to try for a refund. Gasoline taxes work the same way.

Just looked at the form. You've first gotta fill out the form and send it in to establish an account. Then they send you the claim forms.

Is the red (off the road fuel ) 15 ppm ultra low sulfer now just like truck fuel? I wonder if the new Cummins or Yanmar is set up to use the red fuel without damage. I know my truck should not use anything but the ultra low 15 ppm stuff.

I'd guess the fuel is all the same and color is added. Otherwise, off road fuel would be much more expensive because of the lesser amounts to be refined.

FYI...
The Ranger Tug factory has the red dyed diesel fuel at their Kent factory. I assume therefore there's no issue wrt using it for the Cummins and Yanmar engines.

Marinas in Florida have the red fuel and I use it of course in the Lucky Fin. I know it is illegel to use the red fuel in the truck. But if a person accidently spilled some into his truck it has to be Ultra low sulfer. I guess that is my question: is red fuel safe for new diesel pickup trucks? I know it use to be taboo, but I am now getting the idea that off the road fuel is now ultra low. It may not hurt the engine if you accidently got red fuel in the truck............It could happen. 😉

I was told by "persons connected with fuel companies" that a significant amount of older (higher sulfur) diesel is still available. The fuel companies will include this in their mix for fuel supplied as "died red non-tax" fuel. Dued fuel may be identical to new low sufur fuel or may be a mix of what ever is available. Many small farmers with 30 year old diesel tractors often request the "old stuff" when they order fuel for their tanks. What they actually get is anyones guess. I do know if you drive a diesel truck into Alabama and the State DOT officers pull you over and stick the little tygon tube down into your tank and see "red" you are in a heap of trouble (tax evasion & possible jail or $10,000+ fine).

An article in a past issue of "PassageMaker" tells about a couple buying a boat in Europe. They ran into huge fuel/tax problems when going to another country.

I don't believe we'd have problems between states about fuel in our boats. But, how about Canada and Mexico?

I wish our various governments and their agencies would leave things alone. Why should one group of society pay more or less tax than another? Taxes, service charges and fees are a whole other subject.

By the way, my 2009 R-21 EC was delivered with clear diesel fuel.
