The backing on my cockpit carpet is breaking down. I called the manufacture back East and they said I am the first complaint they ever had, (yeah right!). They did say that i could make a clam and they would check into maybe replacing it. But I would get the same junk in replacement. No Thanks! Everyone I have talked to has had the same problem with there cockpit carpet.
There is a company in Portland Or, That will do the same teak carpet with a heavy duty backing that will last. I have used these guys before on my old boat and they really do put out a quality product. My problem is, that they want $700.00 to replace it. I sent them a pattern for the quote.
Tym on the Circle T had a flexiteak deck installed on his boat. It looks great! If I double what I would spend on the new carpet I will have a deck that will last forever.
So this Fall when We haul the boat out west for the winter I am making a stop in San Diego for a day to have the teak deck installed.
Below is a pic of Circle T's

Stuart, We got to see Circle "T"'s flexi teak at the Rendezvous. It looked really great. What happens to water trapped in the latch cutouts? I suppose you could just make sure you dry them out with a towel if they collect water?

Just a quick question, is this product carpet that looks like teak or is it really teak. Next year I have to replace my original carpet.

Can you say with any certainty that this flexiteak deck reduces cockpit engine noise ?

Also, how much weight does it add to the engine hatch ?

My concern with this flexiteak deck would be knowing just how slippery it could become with water splashing all over it and if constant sun might warp, fade and cause any edge curling.

I will admit, it does look handsome. 🙂

Howard,
I got to see Tym's deck just after it was installed and liked it but wanted to wait and see how it went for him. I does look great!
If water collects in the latch cutouts then yes I will just wipe it up. The only real time I think I would get water in them would be when we are washing down the boat or in heavy rains. Small price to pay. It beats putting the carpet away all the time when we are not using the boat, which is hardly never.

It just looks like teak. They do put a real strong backing on it which will last unlike the one that come with the Rangers. I would love to see Ranger start using the company out of Portland but I am sure that the cost would be a bit more then the one they are using. It may not fit the bottom line.

The Flexiteak is a natural nonskid surface. As far as the added weight goes it is not much at all. If I remember correctly I was told that it will add a total of 33lbs to the whole cockpit of a R-29.
