Thanksgiving Cruise

Would love to make this cruise with all of you.... but at this time we are in Cannon Beach, Oregon enjoying the stormy sea weather and today Nov 19th is our 44rd wedding anniversary. We shall be returning home Nov 21st.

We have just sold our Rambler home (sold in 3 days!) and will be moving into our new smaller home in Edmonds Dec 3rd which is but a few minutes away from our Tug moored at Port Of Edmonds. 😀

As you can imagine, we are very busy deciding on what to keep and what to throw out as well as all the other things related to buying & selling a home.

We had already made plans for Thanksgiving so cannot make the cruise with you all. Shame.... as I think cruising with other kindred spirits and Tug owners is the best thing -- especially as the winter weather starts rolling in.

I understand we will return back to Seattle area with snow on the ground.

Here in Cannon Beach the wind is howling and rain at times falls almost horizontally. Our dogs just love this kind of thing and run themselves ragged on the beach chasing objects that glide across the flat sands.

Take care on the Strait and have a wonderful time together.

Will try and make the next cruise with you all -- can't wait. 🙂

BTW -- Gill is recovering slowly and when she's fully recovered she needs a knee replacement... you never know what's next these days.

Barry,
So glad to hear all is well with you and Gil! Congratulations on 44 years! Enjoy the beautiful weather on the coast. Some people would call the type of weather you are experiencing ugly but I, think that when the ocean is in complete turmoil with the rain falling and the wind howling is incredible! It makes it even better when you are sitting inside with a cup of hot refreshment watching it!

David and Maureen

As of today (Sunday) the weather is looking good for the run up to Victoria on Thanksgiving Day. SE winds at 11 to 13 knots, wind waves of 1 to 2 feet. There is a chance of rain thrown in there also. (A little rain is good, it washes all the salt off.....)

As of now, Operation Thanksgiving in Victoria is a go! Right now we have five boats converging on Victoria from three sides...... Anyone else that would like to join us is more than welcome!

We will continue to monitor the weather as we are still five days out.

Unfortunately at the moment we have about a foot of snow here, on an island that is really ill-equipped for this kind of weather. Although snow does not inhibit us from boating, it creates a few scenarios that we have to deal with - housebound aging parents, road conditions that we cannot depend on others to deal with the business and our parents and last but not least, a very steep driveway to get to where That's It is docked! We have not ruled out the possibility of making the trip on Thursday, but we are in a process of evaluation here!! We will keep you posted!!!

Gail

Very much understood! Weather controls where and when we boat! Even if it just means we cannot get out of the driveway to get to the boat.......

By Thursday, it will be 75 degree's, light breeze out of the southeast, sunny sky's! Oh wait a minute, that is for Palm Beach Florida....... Well we will see what the PNW is like on Thursday! Then we decide do we go or not go!

Bob and I are thinking of going to Blake Island for Thanksgiving and not Victoria. Bob is still having pain issues with his knee, especially at night, and I'm not sure how he will do on the boat. Blake is safe just in case we need to head home early.

We are open to other suggestions around the Puget Sound area.

Nita

Nita,
Sorry to hear Bob is still in pain from his surgery. You know, I had not given Blake any thought for Thanksgiving in the "what if" plans. You know, "what if" the wind is blowing to strong to make the crossing, "what if" the weather prediction is just too nasty to go that far. Blake offers up another option for the "what if" plan.

Right now the NOAA weather forcast has changed to an east wind at 14 knots, 1 to 2 foot wind waves for the Straits.

As another thought, how about the south sound? We have never made our way any further south than Gig and Des Moines. If Bob's pain is too much and you decide to cut it early and head home, the south sound is an easy run (I think... since not having been there).

We are going to keep an eye on the weather as we get further into the week. Come late Tuesday or first thing Wednesday morning we will make the final decision as to where we head.

Maybe Hood Canal as another option. Bellevue, Kirkland are also other options meaning you do not have to go through the locks. Both of these are on the list of places we want to go.

This darn weather has us in total control!!! We are open to any suggestion. We love South Sound as we spend a lot of time cruising there. We too will be looking at the weather to see what our choices will be.

We will miss everyone in Victoria. Gail and Patrick - stay warm and enjoy the beautiful snow!! Kim and Tim - I don't know what your plans are as of today, but we will miss seeing you too.

Well, I guess you could say winter has arrived in the PNW!!!! Snow, high winds (gusting 60 mph +), frigid temperatures, and on top of all that, no power for the last two and half hours!!!!! Good thing we got that generator!!!!!! Nice and toasty inside here!

The weather for Thursday continues to look worse and worse. At this time we are going to have to bow out of making the run to Victoria. Maybe another time when they are not predicting 24 knot winds out there!

We are not quite sure where we will head. Maybe Blake, South Sound, or possibly Bellevue and Kirkland. Again, it all depends on what the weather gods bring to town! Snow is once again predicted for Wednesday morning here in Seattle.

We will post our destination either tomorrow or Wednesday. If you are out and about and want to join us, please do!

Dave & Maureen:

Just because it's 5 degrees below freezing, there is snow all over the place, winds are howling, the straights are all whitecaps -- you figure THESE are reasons to keep that window from me!!?? How am I going to get a fresh breeze into my head? (Yeh, pull the plug out of one of my ears!)

Seriously -- our forecast is crappy and you MIGHT get a clear window over to Victoria, but you probably wouldn't get one to go back. You will be wise to spend the time in inland waters this coming weekend. It's 30 miles from Pt. Wilson to Victoria and even on one of those huge 29's it could end up being a very ugly trip.

I'll cancel the band, the dancing girls and the unlimited free boat parts session and try and re-establish it for a better time of year.

Dave

Dancing girls and a band!!??

Who needs turkey and stuffing? I'll take the ferry!

The winds have howled all night long and continue to do so. The power is still out and the temperature is 17 degrees! I had to run the generator all night to keep the heat going.

We will take a look at sometime in the spring for a run to Victoria now. Still not sure what our plans are for the weekend. We will have to wait and see what this weather does. They are calling for snow again Wednesday night early Thanksgiving morning!

Still having FUN!!!

Run the heat, snuggle up and enjoy each other and Karma. We will be thinking of you and our other Northwest friends while we are sharing Thanksgiving Day with our Texas friends. Stay Warm. Herb, Willie and Jake.

It's always interesting to tune in each week to another exciting episode of BAYSIDE KARMA 98199....... This weeks episode...Popsicle Toes and Turkey Pops......... Ouch! I think my tongue is stuck to this turkey pop Maureen!

Stay warm you guys! 😛
Stuart

Tonight is going to be the cold one! Down into the single digits they say! At least the power is back on. The generator sure came in handy last night! Keeping Karma all nice and toasty!

David:

How quickly things change on Juan de Fuca. I was at an overlook early this afternoon and it was SUNNY and FLAT and WITHOUT WIND. It would have been a perfect time for crossing. Our temperature has just gone to "about" freezing. The forecast is for increasing temperatures and rain, though.

The straight will probably be hell in a few more hours, the way it goes around here.

But it was lovely..........

Dave

Sorry to hear about all that nasty weather in the PNW. The weather has been great here in the Chesapeake Bay - current temp 63, low tonight 41, wind 10 to 15, 1' to 2' seas - fishing is great. Hope things turn out better for you.

(Current weather in PNW is why I do not live there any more. Eight years on Whidbey Island was enough for me)

But, it was an experience was it not? Ten years in Florida and if I never go back, that will be too soon for me!

Personally, I had enough of those "experiences" working and living in the bitter cold of the PNW, Sea of Japan and the North Atlantic. These old bones just cannot handle the bitter cold anymore. The warmer climates suit me better now a dazes. This November is a little warmer than usual here in the Chesapeake, and I am enjoying it while I can before I am forced to winterize the boat.

It was funny. My wife is from the North East, and when we were in Florida, she always complained we did not have snow, 4 seasons, etc. I figured she would like it in Maryland with the 4 seasons, snow, etc. After we were here a couple of years, she asked when we were going to move back to Florida. I feel Maryland is a good compromise between the extremes of the North and South. Our kids are grown now with kids of their own. So, here we will stay - close to our kids and grand kids.

I guess everyone has their preferences. That is why people live all over the world.

David: I have a dead computer so am challenged to use iPhone. Nice and calm, dry and warm today on Vivtoria side os Juan de Fuca. Rain coming. Let me know if you do.
