Was out today with family members as we had clear blue skies in PNW Puget Sound Seattle area, light wind, sun shining and with snow capped peaks clearly visible on Mt. Rainer, Mt. Baker, Olympics and the Cascades... a glorious day for sure to be on the water.
So was approaching our lunch time destination Marina and was distracted by my son-in-law who wanted to chat. So we chatted as the subject was interesting. Then all of a sudden the low depth alarm went off and to my horror the depth reading on the Garmin Chart Plotter was read 2 feet.... OMG..... saw that we had entered shallow waters and the tide was out on top of this.... had to turn quickly to starboard to get off the shallow area per the chart plotter and slowly but surely the depth increased along with the alarm sounding all the time. When at around 25 feet all was well and the alarm went off. Son-in-law looked at me and asked what that was all about.... my mistake I said... I should have been more attentive.
All I can say is, thank god for that shallow depth alarm signal... and Oh the embarrassment had we gone aground. 😳
So, please avoid chin wagging when its inappropriate as I've described.
