Time to Paint the Hull

After 4 years the factory applied bottom paint on my R29 is finally in need of recoating. What are the best current recommendations for antifouling paint for a boat stored in the water in the Puget Sound? Any recommendations for coating of rudder and trim tabs? How about surface preparation? Thanks in advance for any advice!

The factory applied paint is Seahawk AF33. Probably best to stay with what is there for best compatibility.

I paint my rudder with a cold galvanizing paint every year and it seems to work well. I think it is pretty much the same as the product Banacle Barrier. I don’t paint the trim tabs. They are easily cleaned every several months by a diver or by myself with a mask and Snorkel from under the swim step.

Four years on your bottom paint is pretty decent. You can of course choose what you wish, but the Seahawk does work well in our environment. Curt's recommendation for the occasional diver is good advice. It really helps keep things clean and your bottom paint lasting longer, and it has the benefit of helping to find issues before they become major problems. And it really pays for itself in helping the bottom paint to last a little longer.

Thank you both. My boat yard offers best pricing for WMP PCA Gold (ablative) or Intralux Ultra hard paint. Are either of these good for Puget Sound or should I pay extra for Seahawk? Any recommendation for one or two bottom coats?

ive been using pettit vivid red. get about 2.5 to 3 years in the sound depending on how much the diver scrubs...

if changing brands its worth enquiring if all the previous paint has to be completely removed first. -
