Tool Kit for R23

Having just upgraded from an old Bayliner to an R23 (outboard), I’m wondering what tools and fluids people carry on board? I carried a comprehensive toolkit on the Bayliner as there were lots of systems that could and would go wrong. Engine oil and maybe hydraulic steering fluid seem like all the fluids I would need (and beer for once I’ve docked!).

We have a 2024, and I've been accumulating tools as I find that I need them. So I'm interested in all responses as well.

Maybe I can help. I have a 2024 R23. What tools depends on what do you plan to do. Do you want to do your own engine maintenance or not? Are you also asking about backup spares too? I had a bigger boat before this and had lots of tools for the inboard diesel. Now things are simpler so lots of tools went with the old boat.

I’m trying to put together a minimal set of tools and spares in case of emergency. I have plenty of tools for planned maintenance but I don’t want to clutter up the boat with them. I’m thinking: pair of pliers, couple of screwdrivers- flat and phillips, multi meter, hammer (my favorite ), adjustable wrench and maybe a spark plug wrench? Spares: bow thruster shear pin, spark plugs (?), engine oil, steering fluid?

Packing nut wrench + 1 tube Syntef packing lubricant, at least one small pipe wrench, complete set of sockets/ratchet both SAE and Metric, SAE and Metric wrench set, adjustable wrench and/or Vise-Grip, engine and transmission oil (1 litre each), engine anti-freeze, water separator fuel filter and fuel filter, sea water impeller and 'O ring', and sea water and alternator fan belts. As above, screw drivers and multi-meter.

My R-23 has a big tool box that stays on board and a traveling tool bag that goes home or on RV trips. The on board box has one of every fuse needed on the boat, plus some electrical wire and zip ties. Spare bulbs for running lights. Wide assortment of stainless, brass and bronze screws, nuts and bolts. Spare drain plug. Duct tape and electrical wire. Dialectic grease. Lithium grease. Tools include full set of metric and SAE wrenches and sockets. Screwdriver with multiple bits. Metric and SAE allen wrenches. Hammer. 1/2” socket bar with socket to remove prop. Multimeter. Travel bag has electric wire strippers, crescent wrenches, vice grips, needle nose, wire cutter, assortment of bits, portable drill, etc. And if you have inflatable boats, don’t forget repair kits is you get a leak.
