Touching up the bottom paint

My R-21 has some small pits and chips missing from the hull right along the nose of the hull. I purchased a quart of bottom paint. I know that you use a foam brush to apply. Do you do any surface prep, like sanding or simply paint it over.

Lightly sand and feather the old bottom paint around the chip hole before touching up with new bottom paint.
