Towing Insurance in Canada

Mike asked this questions on another post so I moved the questions here to start a new post specifically to address the question. Here's Mike's questions:

Perhaps not directly related to this thread but an insurance question no less. We often travel to Canada and were wondering about rates for towing to a repair facility should be be out of the country. For example, engine breaks down in Desolation sound and has to be towed to Comox or Cambell River for repair. Any idea about how much that would cost? Our boat insurance is about to renew and we have a $2500.00 towing limitation where as another policy we are looking at has a 10K limitation. Any ideas or info. would be appreciated. Mike Regets

I would suggest getting ahold of BoatUS to discuss their UNlimitied Towing Package and how it works in Canada. When we went to the Desolation Sound last summer, or other places that do not have BoatUS coverage it was explained to me that one simply calls BoatUS Towing with there problem and if they do not have a towing person in the area you needing a tow from that they will contract with another provider....however you should call them to discuss this option.

I looked at this and decided that most of our cruising would be San Juans and north, decided to just buy C-Tow since the plan I bought covers as far south as Anacortes and to the top of Vancouver Island. With the exchange rate it was under $200/yr.

Vessel Assist out of Friday Harbor is the same company as Boat US. Coverage is throughout the San Juans and Gulf Islands according to Capt. Richard Rodriquez (Vessel Assist).

According to the Towboat US and Boat US website:

TowBoatU.S.® and VESSEL ASSIST® Pacific
This Agreement is applicable throughout United States, Canada, Bahamas and Reimbursement Worldwide.

I understand my unlimited Towboat US policy is good in Canada and the US.

I think I pay about $160 per year...similar to C-Tow rates.
